Goodbye to my 2000 Mazda MPV

Nice story. It's not often - outside of BITOG - that people maintain to support long lives of their cars. I hope the Lexus will endear itself for a long time as well.

A fun fact of the 2000/2001 mazda MPV: it has two separate coolant temperature sensors. One goes to the dash display, and the other goes the engine computer.

Nice! We have an 09 Mazda 5 with a 5 speed MT. My kids grew up in the thing, my oldest learned to drive stick in it, and is now at college with it. 170K on the clock. Many, many road trips in it when the kids were smaller. I don’t know if I can ever part with it. It is such an amazing car that flies under the radar. I’m also a sentimental bastard.
We also have a 2009 Mazda5 in the family. I drove it yesterday - still love the 5-speed MT. It drives perfectly. I suspect the body will rust out before it needs a major repair.

Only 222K km on ours - about 138K miles.

Tough luck! I just found a 2003 MPV in a surprisingly similar color with only 72,449 miles on it. Now go return the Lexus!

I must say! No, I must insist that you drive right back up to that Lexus dealer.

Demand that he undo this deal primo facto, and lecture him endlessly about the lost opportunity he has subjected himself to by not dedictating his copious resources towards retailing the world's greatest minivan. The Mazda MPV... second generation. Not the first! Make sure he knows to avoid the first gen. Weak transmissions.

Once you recover your vehicle in its crustian core, I will gladly arrange terms so that you can go ahead and drive this cherished chariot. Your other one will make a nice parts car. However due to your momentary lapse of reason, I must insist that you pay a bogus dealer fee named after a dead dog.

I call it the FIDO fee. Not to be convinced with the FAAFO fee.

That is a beauty - and is an upgrade on the '00 -'01, with the engine bumped up to 3.0 l and a 5-speed AT instead of 4-speed.

I presume you're selling it. Do you export to Canada? I would be interested.

I don't know how to export to Canada. I wish I did because you're not the first person to ask me that question this week.

Was this vehicle by chance originally from the Los Angeles area but relocated to Texas?

@Number_35, I've been told that getting the paperwork in order is not all that difficult. As long as @macarose gets it to the border, you can drive it across after it clears customs (w/approved paperwork) and pay duty:

Thanks! I will read the linked bulletin.

I know people do (or used to) import cars from the U.S. The vehicles then have to be modified to meet Canadian standards - typically a modified child-seat anchor, and daytime running lights (DRLs). I've done a DRL conversion for a friend's daughter on an American Acura TL. It was a lot of work, but turned out OK.

One concern would be the horror stories I've heard about Canadians buying a vintage dream car (typically a 1960s muscle car) and being hit with a huge retaliatory tariff by the Canadian feds.

I don't know whether this would apply to a non-collector car like a minivan. As well, just to muddy the waters, this van would have been built in Japan, with a Mazda-designed but Ford-built (in the USA) engine.

I need to do more research!

Thanks again.

Yes, DRL kits were a thing, I've installed them @Number_35 .

I was going to mention earlier, that duties on a run of the mill vehicle will most likely be low. I don't think an MPV of that vintage will be highly sought after.

I had two 1st-gen MPVs and loved them. I participated in the late great MPVclub.com forum.

I worked on my friend's 2nd-gen, but have never owned one. They're pretty rare now.

Someone in the neighbourhood has imported a JDM one in RHD. It looks great.

@Number_35, I owned a '92 MPV, I bought it from a client for $600. This was back in late 2003, early 2004, so you can imagine the condition it was in; I live in the rust belt. My wife and I were in the midst of buying our second new home, and made many trips with that beast busting at the seams. I drove it for a while and then sold it for scrap; it was a great truck.

We had a '90, with the SOHC 2.6 and 5-speed MT from 1996 to 2001, and then a '97 from 2001 until 2018.

The '97 was 2WD with the 3.0 SOHC V6 and Jatco 4-speed AT. I got pretty good at changing the timing belt. 😁

Both were really good vehicles, though smaller and less versatile than our present 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan.
