Mobil synthetic in any xw30 flavour would work well for you, and its easy to find.

Mobil 1 pours well, even in 10w30 its goo until -47 or so.

Their 5w30 would work great in that car. Also, Napa filters are great. Theyre made by WIX I beleive.

Where do you find your amsoil in PTBO
I'm comming down this weekend for christamas shopping

You wouldn't think using a speced sized filter or a high efficency filter Pureone would make a difference because the bypass is on the filter mount. Plus you'd think if anything the silicon ADBV and smaller filter volume would fill quicker. I think you could use a larger PF53 size. The filter is almost vertical so drainbraink and filter filling shouldn't be much of an issue. It's just a little tight fit getting it in and out.

I will admit that I don't fully understand why this trend exists. My records: The Purolator Prem+ L10111 gave me low oil pressure. L24011 (oversize) slightly higher. PureOne PL10111 lowest pressure. PureOne PL24011 pressure like L10111 and erratic in cold weather, using 5w30 syn or 0w30 syn. AMS EA029 higher pressure but still slightly erratic in cold weather. Fleetguard LF3554 stinkin awesome good oil pressure, not erratic, ever. It is certainly possible that something (passages, bypass valve, cooler) was getting cleaned out this whole time and is now flowing properly.

If anything there is a case for making sure the internals are clean on an engine with any kind of miles. After you're sure everything is squeaky clean you can tell what else is going on.

I'm not aware of a larger filter that would fit the 3800. I think the 3"O.D. X 4.75" H is the practical limit.

If I were in your position I would buy a FleetGuard LF3554 from Ryder.com and any good synthetic 0w30 (Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec, or other--I use AMSOIL Signature Series 0w30), and then just maintain the oil level between now and May. My rationale:

1. I live in WI, and I have had excellent starting and noticably improved gas mileage with the 0w30 in very cold (routinely below zero) weather. After using Mobil 1 5w30 and AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-30, I think the 0w30 is uniquely suited to short trips in cold weather. Faster starting and better (+ 1-3) MPG.

2. My opinion is that the 3800 should have the large oil filter (spec'd for the 4.3L V6 used in GM trucks) for cold weather. Be careful with the larger filters on w-body cars. As these cars age the hydraulic motor mounts tend to weaken, and with enough age a large bump can compress that motor mount just enough for that larger filter to make contact with the cradle right beneath it. I've seen a couple stories on the Grand Prix forums where guys running the larger filters suddenly lost all oil pressure and left HUGE trails of oil in their wake because the filter broke open.

If you want more filtration, it's best to do a remote mount, but it's not even close to worth it if you're not running an exotic setup. The standard PF47 size filters work just fine.
