Hey guys,

I've been lurking on these forums for years now- lots of great information!! So much so that I've never really needed to post until now lol.. I just got an '07 Vibe with the 1ZZ-FE Toyota engine back in June, and I've about to do my first DIY Full Synthetic oil change before it gets too cold.

I'm trying to get some suggestions for what oil to use.. I've looked through a lot of V/used oil analysis, and have some ideas.. With the help of this forum I stuck with Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 for my '99 Chevy Blazer.. but for the Pontiac I'm getting a bit confused.

I've seen that the 1ZZ-FE has been back-spec'd for 5W-20, but I live in Northern IL so I'm curious about 0W-20. I'm aware it's not really "necessary", but I figured anything to help the cold starts in down to -5degrees would be gravy.

From my research I've narrowed it down to these:

Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 or 5W-20
Castrol Edge 0W-20
Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W-20

.. I'm planning on pairing one of those up with either a Bosch D+ or Royal Purple filter.. whatever's the best deal where I go. I've looked at Royal Purple oil too, but from what I've read PP is [censored] close quality-wise and cheaper. I've also heard that Mobil tends to be particularly compatible with Toyota engines' metallurgy.. PP and Edge are both on sale right now..

For background, it's a 2007 w/ 50k miles.. I drive about 20k miles a year, mostly highway.. My work is a 20 min drive one way and my son who I have visitation with is about 45 min one way- these constitute probly 75% of my mileage.. So not a whole bunch of short trip driving.

So what y'all think? Is 0W-20 a good call, and either way, any of those particular brands particularly superior?

Thanks a ton guys!

I had a 06 vibe 1.8L. I used mobil 1 for 10k oil changes, the engine never used any oil to the naked eye. if you check the used oil analysis on this website, this engine doesn't spit out wear metals

Yes I have noticed these engines are tanks! Really they'll happily take whatever I put in em.. But I'm also looking to do 10k OCIs

I had bad experiences with Mobil 1 in my Blazer (4.3 V6) with oil consumption, but it looks like it's a solid oil for these engines

If your annual mileage is 20k miles, any synthetic twice a year will be perfect match for your driving condition. Since you are going with synthetic, 0W20 will be better than 5W20. These synthetic 0W20 are better: Toyota, Mazda if you can get those at dealer for around $5-6/qt.

The place I work uses a 2006 as a delivery vehicle. Pushing 200K miles and it gets Pennzoil bulk 5W30 every 5K. Runs great, uses no oil and gets 30mpg still.
