Exactly; I'm sure he would have folks eagerly lining up by the thousands to hear his lectures...

Or he could start his own topic and then become mad when we don't give him the answers he is looking for!

Seriously, I do have the similar tendency to fly off the handle when encountered by the typical internet stupidity; so I absolutely sympathize with him. But that still does not stop me from taking cheap shots :)

Come on, we all need thick skin here!

350z is the winner.

I'll start looking for one. Lots on autotrader, plenty with automatics.

I want the roadster one.

15-16 grand used.

I read you're large but try a Fiesta with the ricaro package. My son test drove one and loved it.

Too good for the $15,000 budget. My PT Cruiser convertible idea would get one in good shape at that price with room to spare, yet he might not fit in it. Might check the fit on a Mitsubishi Eclipse convertible, has classic styling.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse was notorious for transmission problems, automatic or manual. The other thing to remember is that the engine uses a timing belt.
The PT Cruiser was also prone to transmission problems, and the shape of the car makes timing belt replacement more time consuming and expensive than on most inline 4 cylinder engines.

I'd prefer the Nissan Z convertible if I could get it in budget.

I gotta check Consumer Reports surveys on that. Sometimes reputations are not earned for a few defects not affecting many. Have you checked Consumer Reports? My point is that ALL cars have had transmission problems, all makes, all years from time to time. What matters is the frequency.

I really liked those cars, especially the 1999 year model. Eagle Talon TSI was my fave.

I'm mentioning this by my experiences working in auto repair. It showed me how much trouble a Mitsubishi Eclipse can easily be, and from what I have seen, Mitsubishi Eclipse transmissions were awful.

I would never have bought my Mitsu if it had a diamond-matic transmission in it.

Was the Eclipse manual tranny the same as the 3000GT? Was it a Getrag?

Aquariuscsm - the OP specifically stated he does NOT want a manual. Nor does the op want a "non-modern" car.
Dude, you REALLY need to take a pill, and get a life outside of the internet. I just don't get why some people get their panties in a knot over forum discussions. Man,I wish that's all I had to worry about in life, must be nice!

A decent "non-modern" car (thinking you must mean a current car),15 grand isn't going to get you much. A "toy" type car to me,is an older car that's easy/cheap to work on,can be all done diy,and must be a standard. I bet if the op taught her how to drive one,he wouldn't be able to get it away from her. A "toy" car should be fun to drive, not an appliance.

So let me get this straight. You don't know how to read, so you post irrelevant information that the op doesn't want. Then when I try to point this out, you tell me to take a chill pill, and say that I basically don't have a life. To top it off, you proceed to say if the op taught her a manual, she would love it. Even though the op said she doesn't want to learn, and doesn't feel safe trying. Then you put words in the op's mouth with what your interpretations are ("A 'toy' type car to me is...") even though it was already clear what was meant. Does this sound about right, or did you fail to read my entire post as well?

That's 3 different times you didn't read. But somewhere along the way I became a douche for pointing out your error? Childish...

Regardless, it seems the op has made a decision that met his criteria. Good luck!

Pretty much...

However, Mercedes SL roadsters accommodate a large variety of sizes, are fun to drive and have loyal followings/clubs to provide maintenance support and organized activities.

I'd look at an SL...

Couldn't agree more.

I'm a bit taller and bigger than you, but fit easily in our R129. I have no doubt the OP would fit in one. His wife would also likely love it.

Oozes classic MB style just puttering around town. Magnificent RWD V8 drivetrain. Loafs along at triple digit speeds all day long, and feels best doing it. Over-engineered and built bank vault safe, you will likely walk away if hit in one. Plentiful spares and surprisingly reliable, too. The last old-school SL as far as I'm concerned. Way better than the later ones as far as build quality, reliability and durability.

And for a really good condition one, they are right now at the very bottom of their value delta, and a drop dead can't miss investment as cars go. One of the very best car buys we've made - I've been offered more for ours than I paid for it 2 years ago. Really solid ones can be had for under $15k, easily. Amazing for a $90k vehicle.

The perfect summertime open roadster.

Unfortunately, I think the OP wants more of a sports type car, and the SL, outside of the AMG versions, is not one of those.

Good thread! OP please post pics of the car you get. I had a suggestion though....how about a BMW Z4? Oh and thanks Tony for keeping check....I was going to suggest a Miata since the OP said he seriously doubts he could fit. So whats the harm in test driving one to find out for sure? I test drove one once and I loved it, but I did not want to get corrected by Tony telling me my errors.

Ok. I'm going to be polite, since I am wrongfully mislabeled.

I am politely pointing out that the op has indeed tried a Z4. ("I tried to drive a Z4 BMW convertible a few years back and it wasn't even close")

BUT you do have a good point with the Miata. He "doubts" he can fit. If he likes them, why not find out for sure?

I apologize.....you are right. I read it and missed the comment about the Z4.
