Not Seattle, but close.
I have Ad-Aware and Spybot, but there are a few things neither seems to rid my computer of, and Ad-Aware tends to hang up when trying to delete stuff.
I tried PandaSoft, and a couple of others, but they won't work without the ActiveX stuff.
My computer got hijacked around the first of December without my knowledge,a nd about $100 worth of long-distance charges to Vanuatu and the UK appeared on my phone bill. Of course I told everyody concerned that I wasn't paying, and then installed the anti-spyware that I have now.

Spybot works with Firefox, I don't think adaware does. I haven't really encountered any bad spyware with firefox, just a couple tracking cookies.

Right now I have the Twain-Tech virus in my directory and nothing gets rid of it. I have installed Ad-aware, PestPatrol, and SpySweeper. I used to run SpyBot and it was useless-but perhaps their purchased version is better. BTW i run Opera (Not recommended, its junk) and IE.

If anyone can tell me how to get rid of Twain-Tech-I'm all ears. I plan on reformating and reinstalling.

I do like Firefox, it's my default browser..I think. I have Netscape for the ISP and their browser tries to take over, but I don't let it. TYhe only thing about Firefox so far is that several of the anti-spyware programs won't check it at all, or don't seem to work properly.

Got to Symantec [ http://search.symantec.com/custom/us/query.html ]
an search Twain Tech. There are two responses.

There's a few malware things floating out there that dial up long distance numbers if a modem is present on the computer. Absolutely frustrating!!!!

I suggest purchasing Pest Patrol, or at least trying their 30 day test-run. Update Adaware, Spybot and Pest Patrol, Reboot into safe mode (F8 at boot) run all 3, reboot, go back into safe mode then run all 3 again.

Another program I've found to work is Trojan Remover. (hey hey...let's keep it clean!

) While it usually finds nothing, it saved my butt on my home PC with a buried file that neiter AdAware nor Spybot found. Granted, that was before I found Pest Patrol.

I've only seen 1 computer, a Windows ME machine, that couldn't be completely cleaned that didn't run all 3 of these spyware programs in safe mode in tandem with a reputable AntiVirus program. Once the machine is cleaned, verify Netscape or Firefox is your default browser. If you purchase Pest Patrol, it runs in the background keeping junk away in realtime. Very nice. We just purchased the corporate edition for my job.

Good Luck.

My OS is ME.
I find that when I run Ad-Aware and Spybot in safe mode, then run them in regular mode, things that were supposedly cleaned reappear.

That's exactly why we laid down the $$$ for the corporate edition of Pest Patrol...

I used to have both Ad-Aware and Spybot on my computer, but since making the change to Firefox, I have since deleted both as neither were any longer needed.

I use:

Mozilla Firefox - Free
AVG Anti Virus - Free
ZoneAlarm Firewall - Free

No problems whatsoever.

Mark,
You're discovering that Spybot and AdAware don't do such a hot job. That comes from testing in our lab environment, as well as real world experience.

Spyware is browser independent. Spyware comes from agreeing to EULA's and downloading (knowingly or not) the spyware software. So if you download anything, you risk spyware. No matte what your browser.

I recommend a layered approach. Try SpySweeper from Webroot (heck, they have a free 30 day trial). Also try Pest Patrol. Run them in safe mode several times. See if it corrects it.

I saw an article in the newspaper recently about Microsoft buying a anti-spyware program. I think it was Spybot but I can't remember.

I used to have all kinds of spyware problems, especially the killer of them all, CWS (Cool Web Search). Nothing, absolutelly nothing, beats Webroots Spysweeper. I tried EVERYTHING. Spybot and Adware are useless as far as I'm concerned. The latest version of spysweeper will get rid of all the varients of CWS; practically nothing else out there will, even a program called CWShredder. I go all over the net now, and I never get spyware anymore. You have to pay for spysweeper now, but it has so many functions that replace all the various other programs. It'll delete spyware, and it has various shields that block spyware from even getting on your computer. It does everything that spybot, adware, and the various free "blocking" programs like spyware blaster and spywareguard do, all in 1 very user friendly package.

Okay, so I downloaded AVG.
Previoulsy I had scanned with both Ad-Aware and Spybot, and supposedly clean everything out, except for a DSO that Spybot find and can't fix, and a CoolWeb registry change that Ad-Aware can't fix.
I ran AVG and it found 280 Trojan Horse infections(that just sounds wrong). It claimed to 'heal' them, but actually sent them to the 'virus vault'. I scanned again and it showed an additional 274 of the same thing. So...what should I do? Are these guys just sitting in this 'vault' thing harmlessly? Can I delete them , or what?

Thanks for whatever help comes.

Try this. Its the new beta released by Microsoft. I think it's really good. As a matter of fact-I uninstalled SpyBot and Ad-Aware after trying this.

Microsoft Aniti Spyware

And let me guess it only works with IE. Isn't it about time they came out with something like this? Think about it, it's like an automaker not making parts for their own cars.

You really shouldn't have too many problems with Firefox.
