I have a model 6100f modem and i want to go wireless on my laptop. It's currently connected to my desktop pc.Is there any easy, cheap way to make the laptop wireless and keep the desktop as is?

How old is your laptop? Does it not have a wireless card in it already?
If so, all you need is a wireless router which you can get some fairly cheap. My desktop is hard wired to my Netgear wireless router and this old HP laptop I'm on is wireless as well as my wife's new Toshiba laptop.

Not to nitpick but to use the correct terminology

you need a wireless Router that plugs into the modem.

then any pc would plug into the router(or connect through wireless)

you dont need to get a new cable/dsl whatever modem.

Your model of laptop may or may not have wireless built in

It appears to be an XP laptop with a mobile pentium 4 chip.

if your laptop doesnt have built in wireless

you need a wireless
1.USB adaptor
or
2.PCMCIA card

to use wireless.

if the laptop doesn't have wireless card (receiver) built in, you need the USB wireless adapter:

Linksys routers are affordable, and work great and they have pretty good customer service.
Netgear and Dlink are also well reputed, but Linksys is the most widely accepted I think...

If you are not modifying the router with 3rd party firmware, any should work reasonable well. Some may be less stable than others and need rebooting once in a while (check review on amazon and newegg), but other than that, they are all compatible.

If you are modding, then the chipset vendor and the memory (RAM/Flash) sizes make a difference, but not the brand.

i just want something so that i can run my laptop wireless and still be able to use my desk comp wired.Ive noticed g,n ratings and 54mbps and other specs like that. Which are the better ones? which of these is decent,price-wise? http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1260853129/ref=sr_pg_4?ie=UTF8&rs=172282&sort=price&keywords=wireless%20router&bbn=172282&rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A!493964%2Ck%3Awireless%20router&page=4

They all allow that.

Just get a Linksys or ASUS and call it a day.

also make sure you setup security on your wireless router unless you want neighbors borrowing your internet connection.
WPA2 is the best easy to use encryption setting.
(all new routers support this)

A local guy got arrested for driving around in his car stealing wireless internet and watching underage adult movies.. so it can be pretty serious.

let us know how it works out.. I've used some of their stuff in the past without any issues.. but when its that cheap.. you might have an issue or 2...

I read that one might need a firmware update as they are old stock also.
