Mitsubishi montero (3.8l v6 84k ODO) SUV used for around town. Been on M1 5w30 5k OCIs then a few years back switched to 7.5k intervals. Now using m1 0w30 this year. Since Wally world doesnt have 0w30 readily available, Im thinking of instead of changing oil to something else, replacing the filter and topping off more 0w30 (I have a 2-3qts left in the garage).

This supply shortage is the perfect opportunity to try 10k OCIs. Am I nuts? Never had a UOA done. Maybe I should sample the 0w30 (it has 7k mi right now) during my filter change and 0w30 top-off and finally get a UOA done.

I forgot to add that the truck gets about 15k mi annually but most trips are <10mi on suburban streets with a 2-3 off road dirt excursions per year (very tame off roading for the family sledding trips or just to lube the 4wd system)...

Been doing annual oil changes on the wife's 3.8L for the last three years, she puts about 15=16K miles a year. Used M1 5w30 EP the first year, Amsoil 5w30 last year and Amsoil 10W-40 this year (10W-40 is the only grade the local guy carries, ordered some 5w30 for next year). I change the oil filter every four months...might do it today in the snow storm. Haven't done any UOAs.

standard M1 0w30 (I did not realize there was an extended at this viscosity). I think Im going to follow Johns advice above and pull a sample prior to top-off and pony up for a UOA.

RG - I understand your sarcasm! You should have seen me stress going to 5k syn and then 7.5k syn. I was brought up on the 3k mantra!

I agree with Johnny. 1 year OCI does take a little getting use to but I learned to enjoy the extra time I have.

I would stick to 7500 max OCI with all that stop & go driving for sure. I would consider what you are driving as severe service.

W/o a UOA it is hard to tell. Invest in a UOA after the run and report back with results. All the best to you...

Don't need to change the filters so often. It would be easier to run the amsoil filter for the year they will holdup.

it will be fine. just keep an eye on the oil level. At the end you should get a uoa if it is within norms for the mileage no problem. If it is not, one overlong OCI does not destroy an engine.
