Any one know where I could find a list of motor oil’s conventional and synthetic that meet the GM specification # GM4718M

Thanks in advance

Not aware of any lists that document this, but two viscosities of Mobil 1 meet this spec:
1) 0W-30
2) 5W-30

Have you tried searching GM's site for a list?

Pretty well ANY brand syn seems to meet this standard.

I just googled GM4718M and Pennzoil, QS, Castrol, Mobil, Citgo, Shell, etc.... all exceed the spec.

Bill

Bill, things have improved, a couple of years ago only a few did. He still needs to be sure the exact oil he's getting meets the spec, not all oil in a manufacturers synthetic lineup do meet it.

Speaking of specs and the oils that carry them. I'm finding it hard to pick out a oil when the pdf files on a oil brand web-site say one thing but the back of the bottle don't list any. Yesterday I visited two local super wal-marts and 2 local AAP stores. I checked out all of the Castrol, Quaker State, Super Tech, and Valvoline line (dino and syn) and to my surprise there NO mention of what specs for these oils. Anyone else notice this?

Here is the list of GM4718M Certified oils as of May 2006.

Product Name Viscosity Grades ILSAC Grade
Chevron Supreme Synthetic 5W-30, 10W-30 GF-4
CITGO SUPERGARD Synthetic 5W-30, 10W-30 GF-4
Mobil 1 0W-30, 5W-30, 10W-30 GF-4
Northland, Synergy Synthetic 5W-30 GF-4
Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 5W-30, 10W-30 GF-4
Texaco Havoline Synthetic 5W-30, 10W-30 GF-4

Thank you. So.... no conventional oil' meet's the standard? Where did you find the information?

And thank you again for posting the information.

I've noticed it several times on different brands. If the spec sheet has a recent date I would go by that.

I did find this....

Thank you. So.... no conventional oil' meet's the standard? Where did you find the information?

GM4718M seems to be a synthetic only spec.

GM6094M is for conventional and synthtetics.

Got it from the GM TechLink site.

The list you posted for GM6094M oils is outdated.
The latest one is dated August 8 2007.

Here is the latest:
GM Oil List

Any oil that is cincerned with it's customer's know this information will place it in the back label. So you could easily go to a part's store and just read the back labels. Most oil's that meet GM4718M will state this in small print some place on the label.

Not quite, there's no law against misleading a customer with spec approvals that you do not have. It can be seen as baiting a big player into a uber-expensive legal battle which would result in a bunch of free advertising. That's why it's nice to have independent validation of claims so we don't have to decide to believe a marketer or not.

Here are the oils that GM has independently verified to meet their spec - GM6094M list first, then the GM4718M list (which still does not have Quaker State on it either, nor Synpower, nor Syntec, nor...) Looks like the newly reformulated Castrol GTX is back on the conventional-level GM6094Mlist after getting booted off for lack of performance back in May.

Is that the heat requirement that a motor oil has to meet to fulfull for example the Corvettte requirement? There was very limited space inside the engine compartment of the Corvette so they had to eliminate the oil cooler. So the only oils that could meet the heat requirement were synthetic oils.

GM4718M = heat requirement yep. GM decided to do that and make it a bigger sump (7qts) to get around the oil cooler. This is why the oil pan on a corvette has fins on it for cooling too.

"QS now meets it, castrol does not. "

What is the source of your information? The GM oil approval list dated August 2007 includes GTX and QS. Pretty much every name brand conventional oil seems to be on that list with the exception that I don't see any of the high mileage formulations there. I wonder if that is because there is something about high mileage formulations which disqualifies them or if it is a marketing thing???

There are 2 GM specs, one for conventional-level protection-GM6094M, and one for higher performance-GM4718M.

Mobil Clean High Mileage is listed as GM6094M-approved.
