GM OLM scares me

06 Impala w/3.5 V6 - OLM goes off between 5500 and 5800. I use the OLM and run PP in it. Silverado w/6.6 Duramax - OLM goes off right around 10K. I run Delvac 15w-40 HD Dino and use the OLM. I use AC Delco filters in both. You guys keep shelling out your hard earned dollars to the oil companies with their record profits and I will follow the recommendations of the manual which I have done for years without a single oil related engine problem. As others have stated, the only way to be sure is to run an UOA which I have done for both of my vehicles with good results. The OLM for my applications has been dead on based on the UOA.

Please dont tell us how/where/when to buy our oils - for vehicles we keep from birth until old age retirement day. My vehicles go to their graveyard running. I usually drive the rust bucket there myself. Very little consumption & no oil smoke - as the attendant there grabs my keys and title - removes my plate - then drives the vehicle to a place where it gets parts removed - then crushed/recycled later. A couple of times, the dipstick was even semi-clear when it's last breath was exhaled at crunch time.

Run your long OCIs... I'll run my shorter OCIs... thank you.

dreadedws6 are you out of town?
If you have time you should take the truck into the dealer and get the OLM settings checked. If they can't do anything, go back to the traditional OCI method and use Fords 5000mi/6 months which ever comes first schedule.

I want to take it into the dealer, but unfortunately they are closed when i have time to go in. I really want them to check this out, its just to bad they are always closed.

Have a look at this PPT file from GM. It a few years old but maybe it'll help with this discussion. it's way over my head but maybe you guru's here can decipher it.

its not unreadable to see the OLM come on with over 10,000 miles.
you must be driving long distances rather than city driving.
it would make sense wouldn't it? you engine has less starts and stops and actually per mile the engine is running for a shorter time than a engine doing city stop and go driving.
10,000 miles on a duramax would be very safe as well.
for one it takes about 10 quarts and also diesels are easier on oil than gas engines
I have no problems using the OLM. sending out samples for analysis would be able to see if the OLM is doing well or not.

To achieve the SM rating, the oil must be engineered for extended drain intervals; both dino and synthetic. The days of having to dump the oil at an arbitrary 3 or 5k interval are long gone.

I have not seen anyone mention this yet, but I may be blind. In order for the OLM to be accurate, you must run an oil that meets or exceeds GM's special specification as stated in the owner's manual. The OLM in the Colorado I used to have impressed me a great deal. In fact, it was the only thing about that truck that impressed me . . .

I currently have 8,000 kms (4970 miles) on this OCI and the GM OLM is at 50% (Running Syntec 5w30).

It would be interesting to see when it tells me to change the oil, but it likely won't make it to that point, as I'll be dumping it in late October for a fresh dose of synthetic for the winter.
