So some of you might remember my post before about when to change the oil if like 12,500 miles was to long. So here is an update.

At 1,000 miles the oil was changed to a FRAM TG filter, with mobile 1 and the OLM reset. So then at about 13,500 miles, with no message I changed the oil, but DID not reset the computer to see just how long it would go for.

Well last night on our way out, it FINALLY SAID CHANGE OIL. At 16,500 miles.

I swear the only reason this went off is because for the last month my driving schedule changed (from about 1,200 miles a week to about 200).

So seriously who thinks dino could have lasted that long?!

And if you said I was easy on the truck, remember it was hauling easily over 2,000lbs of sheetrock and or metal studs on the rack for a fair amount of that as well.

Hmm..

Mine goes off at around 4,800 miles in the winter...consistently. It's all 6 mile trips in the cold.

UOA's show my GM OLM is very conservative.

Haven't had a full summer one yet. I'll be interested in seeing what effect warm weather has on it.

What oil is recommended in your car? I know some of the GM's are now recommending Mobil 1, could the OLM be based on using the recommended oil? If so, that is probably accurate.

Yea the one on my camaro usually goes off around 5 thousand miles or so..I definately wouldnt trust Dino to go anywhere near that long.

All new GM OLMs have a max of 15,000 miles supposedly under *ideal* conditions.

FWIW: On my previous 2002 Camaro, with a max reading of 7500 miles, it usually came on ~6000. With a deep sump on a truck engine I think 5000-7000 miles is fine when towing on the hwy. With a lot of load, I'd ignore the OLM and reduce it to 3000-5000 depending on UOAs.

Mine went off around 6-7k and judging by my UOAs (which no does around here) @4k seemed that the OLM to be spot on. (2000 chev 4.8l 4x4 ext cab)

Folks, UNLESS your going to do tests of the oil, your comments that oil is shot @ 5k or 15k is useless.

No matter what oil you have in there.

With the OP, I'd say that your OLM needs to be reprogrammed. With ANY oil, 16k is pushing it. You should have run a UOA @ 13,500 to prove that Mobil 1 is doing the job. I know @ 4k my UOAs were worst with Mobil 1 than other oils. I would not want 13k OCis with it.

Take care, bill

On my 98 Grand Prix with the N/A 3.8L, the OLM would reach 0 in about 6,000 miles.

In our 04 Envoy with the I6, it takes about 12,000 miles or so. A UOA with M1 (SL stuff) came back with a nice report.

Get some UOAs done and put your mind at ease. Then you'll know for sure.

The one on my wife's Honda goes off at about 6K with a city commute. Seems about right, blotter samples do not look bad at all at that point.

My 2006 Suburban OLM goes off at 5500 in winter and maybe 8000 in summer due to longer freeway trips. No way I would ever go past 10,000 with any oil (except amsoil)So, I just change at every 5000 mile revolution of the clock because it easier to remember.

The OLM in my 05 Silverado EC 4WD w/ 5.3L would range from 25-35% by the time I hit 5000 miles which is when I always have my OC's done. On my NBS 07 Silverado EC 4WD w/ 5.3L I am only at 4300 miles so it is too early to tell. I did an OC at 1500 miles though. They rest the OLM. It is currently around 80-85%( I looked about a week ago and it was at 85% ). So it dropped 15%+/- in approx 2800 miles.

The OLM doesn't know if your running dino or synthetic oil. It's programmed to think you're running 5w-30 dino.

Would suggest taking truck to dealership and have them check to make sure the OLM is working correctly.

The OLM in my 06 Silverado 5.3 V8 Z71 has never come on. it does read between 20-35% at 5k though. I do 5k OCIs with oil (Schaeffers 7000 10w-30) and filter (either Wix or AC Delco) change and reset the OLM.

I disregard OLMs. My first one went off at 13.2K.

If you plan on selling prematurely -- or you lease... then go by the OLM. Folks like myself - who keep vehicles from birth until death, don't roll the dice on electronic parts reliability relating to engine oil.

I have an honest question regarding this, since I'm unfamiliar with the GM OLM. If you follow the OLM to the letter and use GM approved products and filters, and you have an engine failure that is proven to be oil related, is it warrantied? Or is there some fine print in the manual stating that the OLM is only a rough guideline and the owner is ultimately responsible for timely OCIs?

In my manual, it states that to follow the OLM or 1 year max whichever is first to happen.

Also if you are using the engine for towing, dusty conditions, etc, then change it more often (my truck said 3k miles or 4months, My Moms (same truck/engine combo but 2 years newer) says 4k or 6months.

I've found if your towing and using the tow mode the OLM does go off sooner, so its noticing that mode. My Moms truck went off around 3700 miles when they were towing a 18 foot trailer from UT to Seattle.

Yes, if you followed it and not towing, dusty, etc conditions GM is going to warrenty any problem... (unless like any MFG, they can find a way to blame you..

The OLM doesn't ignore the load. It takes all that into account

I agree with those who say "just verify it with UOA". That should tell you if you're fooling the OLM ..or suffering from some insidious antagonist like fuel dilution or air filtration flaws (coolant ingress to the oil, etc.).

From what I've seen in UOA where the OLM was used ..it was dead on in indicating when to change the oil ...at least from the oil's condition. Keep in mind that you can have some pretty lousy metal numbers (by BITOG standards) and the oil can still be suitable for continued use.

Well, I have seen my monitor come on at all times. I have seen it never come on and have been around 5k miles, then I've seen it come on at 2,000 miles. I have then reset it, and it would come back on at another 2K, so something may be goofy on mine, because it just goes on here and there
