Gm Invests in V-8 Engines Back pedaling on EVs

Well didn't dodge claim they're "going to stop making V8s"?

Dodge didn't, neither did FCA. The European guy at the very top of Stellantis did and he was warned by every FCA executive that this was a terrible mistake, that he did not understand the American market, but he was arrogant and didn't listen. No surprise that once he was finally ejected the V8 came back within weeks, and the "new" Ram CEO Tim K was back in his spot within days.

A European that doesn't understand Americans and is arrogant? Say it ain't so.

HEY Tim!!!!!! How about a reg cab short bed 392 Scat Pack sport truck so the V8 can come back with a bang??? 6.2 Super Charged as a option. Just for the heck of bring back the Cuda with all the bells and whistles.😁

GM is still investing in battery tech and in fact made a recent discovery. EV's will get better incrementally. They're not going away.

"General Motors revealed Tuesday a new battery chemistry called lithium-manganese-rich (LMR), which it says should slash costs while delivering driving range that’s just shy of the most advanced batteries on the market.

“With LMR, we can deliver over 400-mile range in our trucks while significantly reducing our battery costs,” Kurt Kelty, GM’s vice president of battery, propulsion, and sustainability, told TechCrunch."

"GM says the new cells will be cheaper for a few reasons. For one, manganese is cheaper than cobalt or nickel. The LMR chemistry will have 0-2% cobalt, 30-40% nickel, and 60-70% manganese. That’s significantly less than today’s leading NMC cells, which are up to 10% cobalt and 80% nickel."

so its their biggest investment in engine plant ever at 888M (from article)
how many Billions will the 6.2 replacement recall be?

No matter whether selling or buying real estate or vehicles, it is not easy to beat the market.

Without paying any attention to either end of the spectrum when it comes to EVs (both absolute lovers or haters both for possibly spurious reasons) the EV market is not zooming upward as fast as the manufactures had planned for. Vehicle manufacturers need to hedge their bets and adjust their plans and products when the market is inconsistent with those plans and products.

Agree.

People saying EV's going away permanently, hmmmm

There are companies out there much more successful and innovative with their EVs than GM. The only one I would have considered was the Volt, if they bumped the electric range to 100 miles it would have been pretty tempting, but 50 was not enough.

It's too bad their EV aspirations (and their ability to sell them profitably ) can't support another division, like a new "Saturn" where those folks can concentrate on making world-class EVS, and the ICE folks at Chevy, Buick and GMC can concentrate on making engines that don't self-destruct. Right now they're producing EVS that don't sell, and trucks with engines that everybody's afraid to buy. Are they failing in their attempt to be all things to all people?
Does anyone think that one of the reasons that they do not sell well is because of the very short sighted decision to not have apple car play or Android Auto in any of the EV's (except some Cadillac) ??

I'm probably not the right one to ask. I've got Android Auto in the Kia and I really don't see the big deal with it. It duplicates a few of my phone features on the screen and that's really all I see. But folks far younger than I care very much about that stuff so I don't know why they wouldn't include it.

If China is successful with BYD, globally, I'd expect that to keep the EV trend alive.

Viewing the trend-line of the past decade, BEV volume and share is increasing.
This would seem to indicate that any serious volume player in the industry needs to be active in developing product in this space.
In GM's case, it may simply be a matter of their having put a lot of money and effort into the wrong BEV designs and that is remediable.

For anyone younger, absolutely. That would be there top priority. Of course they would rather take the bus or Uber anyway, so thats a whole different issue.
