GM DOD/AFM Interesting Oil Observations

I started another thread on this issue before I was re-directed here. A simple question: Do you believe that this is a non-issue going forward with the newer GM AFM engines? I ask because we're toying with the idea of getting another vehicle with a GM made truck a possibility. I know all manufacturers have some problem vehicles slip through but I thought this issue was significant enough to give me pause.

Who knows. It is very possible that they have the bugs all worked out by now. And, as has been stated, it is not a large percentage that have problems. Buying just about any vehicle today, regardless of OEM, seems to be more like gambling than it seemed in the past. And there will always be folks like me, that do not like some of the features that the OEM gives us, and we find a work around or a modification to change things to what we want. Seems like the list grows longer with each buying cycle of the things I have to change that the OEM shoved my way.

We buy a few GM trucks quite regularly. In our fleet we have never experienced the issue. Never. And we use them in a duty cycle that voids the warranty from any other mfgr.

That alone is enough for me to conclude that it is hardly as huge as the folks on the Net imagine after re-reading the same info on multiple websites over and over. Even the most jaded anti GM bashers must eventually realize that this is no longer a problem in post 2011 vehicles. But it may take a while.

It is a fact, however, that we have ALWAYS been the R&D department for the car makers. They do this every time new tech comes out, and I can understand the apprehension....

Yes, AFM is on the 3.9L but is NOT on the 3.5L.

Right,ok, our 07 so far isn't bad on oil its doing ok.

I really cannot confirm anything on this. My GUESS is that AFM technology is ok from ~2012 to present. But I have not owned a GM truck (nor will I) with AFM. The only input I can give is on the 5.3L in '05-'09 CARS. On those I would definitely get the AFM deactivated. Your concern on this issue should not be shrugged off.

Yep. I still see red every time I think of dead batteries in my TPMS triggering my dashboard indicator. I refused to replace them (additional $240) when I bought new tires recently.
