We must remember that news papers are written so people with less than an 8th grade educ can comprehend. Seems like GM and some others ads have the same philosophy. I actually think Ford & Honda are the best out there today.

One ad I find hilarious is the Toyota ad where the geeky family tells how their old Camry got passed down to the kids. And the kids were ecstatic. What red-blooded American kid would give a double fist-pump and shout "YES!!!" when they were told that they were getting a third-hand Camry? And the little brother daydreams about getting to drive a Camry Hybrid??? Puh-leeze...

I was a little crunched for money and buying the new VW let me lower my payments with low 1.9% financing. I took $4k of equity from my Accord and sold $1k worth of loose parts. I then paid off a $3k credit card and used the rest to refurbish a rental unit.

Not a bad deal considering when the dust settled I got a nice new car. Not many people have equity in their car though.

You don't remember what it was like to be 16! My first car was a 1983 Plymouth Sapporo and I was excited to drive it (this was in 1994).

Yes I do; I still think you'd have to incredibly geeky and dull to get excited over a hand-me-down Camry.
And FWIW, my first car was a 1970 Mustang Grande.

Well,
You can get a killer deal on anything badged "Saturn", without doubt.
Now, this woman will presumably have a job in the not distant future, and if her current car, upon which she depends for job chasing, grocery shopping, and so on was really shot, buying a new car at a killer price may have been a perfectly rational decision.
She may have had sufficeint savings to cover the cost of the car, or she may have an employed spouse.
Anyway, don't dismiss this woman as a fool, or her decision as foolish.
In context, she may have made a very rational decision.
After all, a new Vue is not exactly a new BMW, or even a new Sky.
It is a practical, unexciting, workaday vehicle.

I offered $10k off MSRP on a VUE (Antara) when the Penske deal was in the works. A week later it fell through and the offer might have looked a little better.

Those were nice little cars. Rusted out bad up here though.

Yes, almost as hilarious as the old "too sexy for my..." song Camry ads.

Or this one where the "be all, end all" Toyota appliance is a "mid-life crisis" car!

The sad part is that the species American Sheeple actually believes this excrement.

I also remember those ads. It's hard to believe that anyone took them seriously. How about the Subaru ad where the nerd-boy gets the warm fuzzies because some little twerp thinks he has a cool car?

It did mention a great deal offer from GM, and featured a GM car, but it was not a GM ad.

Yeah, I'm glad someone figured that out. I wonder how it would have altered the thread

I too found it totally whacked that they would use someone who is under lay off to promote new car purchasing. Very strange.

One of my young co-workers bought a new Honda Civic Si one month into the job, while still on probation and at least 3 months to go before that's up, and no guarantee of hours where we are unionized and seniority based. It was amusing watching her face as she talked about it. One moment her eyes would light up in anticipation of delivery day, then almost immediately her face would tighten and the smile would disappear as she wondered if she'd get enough hours to make her payments, student loan payments, and whatever other debt she's carrying.

I was surprised she got approved through whatever bank or finance company she's dealing with, since I'd always thought job tenure was a big factor in credit calculation. But maybe she had a co-signer, or maybe the rules have changed. They must have if GM is willing to give financing to the unemployed.

I think there is a lot more to the story then we get in those few seconds. As others have said she could have had enough cash to buy it outright. Certainly she isn't going to get a loan with NO job at all. Something is missing from this. Also, I caught a little in there about a college promotion that helped her buy it cheaper. Sounds like she is going back to school. She had some money for this obviously.

I don't know how it is now, but just a few years ago even having a job offer for a good job was sufficient to get a car loan.
