Giving Up On iPhone Face ID

Tried out Face ID for a few months and only because it is necessary for having my credit cards on my phone. It is too much of a hassle because it does not always recognize your face on the first try and you have to swipe up for a second try. My second hand is not always free to do the swiping. I just cancelled Face ID on my phone.

I am sacrificing the convenience of not needing a physical credit card just so that I can always turn my phone on with just one click.

Weird. I’ve been using FaceID since 2017 never had the issue that you describe. Where do you have the face of your phone pointing when you swipe up? Earlier FaceID devices had a much narrower scope for detecting your face. Most two hand users have their phones really low on their body which can cause issues with FaceID. Try moving it up a bit and make sure you are looking at your screen when unlocking if you have attention awareness functions enabled. Also, are you wearing glasses normally?

My phone is the iPhone 13. I do wear glasses and find that Face D is better at adding glasses on than taking them off. I set up Face ID without my glasses and have better success than if I set up with glasses on. I have tried many times setting up Face ID, with and without glasses, in an effort ot improve the recognition rate.
I do look straight at my screen and hold the phone about 18 in away.

haven't had any bad experiences with Apple Face ID. My biggest complaint with my iPhone these days is my apple pay doesn't always work. was starting to think it was an issue with certain merchants I frequent. lets see Lowe's, food lion, speedway, but this happens also on the vending machines at my job. may switch back to my iPhone XR and see if it's the radios in my 13.

Would have been nice if Face ID was required for Apple Pay but the phone could be unlocked without Face ID. But Apple does not offer that option. As soon as Face ID is disabled for unlocking, a message pops up saying credit card details have been erased from the phone.

Since you disabled and erased your Face ID have you tried setting it up again

I'm sorry you've experienced this.

I've had good luck with it. My phone is set up to allow either me or oilBabe to open it with FaceID. Hers is also set up that way. If anything would happen to either of us, the other could open the phone.

iOS 18 allows us to also lock apps. So any banking or similar apps require FaceID to open, adding an extra layer of protection.

Is there a problem with your phone? Is the front facing camera malfunctioning?

Just some thoughts. For us, it works really well.

Sorry it's been such a frustrating experience for you.

I have three iPhones - an SE (thumbprint) - 13 on face - and left my new 16 on PIN bcs I often hand it to my wife or daughter like when driving - and if I was ever seriously injured they can get to contacts at my workplace etc …
On PIN - having one of the stick on rings makes one handed unlocks and swipes much easier …

Password works well on my phone, it is just that security is not enough of a concern for me to go through the extra trouble of entering the password every time I use the phone. One click is all I want to do to use my phone.

My photos turn out well, so the camera must be fine. No screen protector but I do have a case.
Do you take a lot of selfies? We're talking the front camera, not the rear. Also, the Face ID camera is a different camera than the picture camera.

You can use the alternative looks to have it store your face with and without glasses. I'm also seeing in the settings an Add Glasses setting now. You can also require attention or not require attention. Require attention is more secure. With require attention my eyes can look completely to the side with my face looking right at the phone and it won't unlock, but as soon as I put my eyes on the phone it unlocks.

This is very possible.

Settings -> Face ID & Passcode -> Enter Passcode -> You can then select the situations where you want to use Face ID

iPhone Unlock <- Deselect this one and you will be asked for a passcode every time.

I'm with the others, I've been successfully using Face ID for many years, iPhone Xs Max, even in a completely dark space because the Face ID camera is IR.

Hope these couple little settings help get it sorted for you to be less inconvenient.

Same here, never have issues with it, wife never has issues with hers and almost everything we buy is with Face ID in stores or online with Apple Pay (online I typically confirm on my Apple Watch though. OP might have a problem with the phone which I strongly believe.

With that said, you do not have to use Face ID for your wallet to the best of my knowledge though I never tried. Everything I seem to read online says you can use passcode. However you may need to reload your cards and I THINK it is possible the issuer might require Face ID?
From Apple

Tried it many times, just selecting "Contactless and Payments" for Face ID. I still end up needing Face ID or passcode to unlock the phone. Best I could do was get a four hour window before passcode is required again.

On my phone, when setting up Apple Pay, it says "works best with Face ID", and wants Face ID set up before it will proceed.

No idea what kind of issue there would be unless the facial scan wasn’t done right.

I’ve been using this for years and years. On newer personal tech, and older work phones. No issues across multiple devices and accounts.
