Have you given a stranger a quart or two of oil at say a convience store?? I did this a couple of weeks ago at a Sunoco near me. This young fella had already bought a quart of PYB and he had this older Honda. I figured what the heck.. I gave him a quart of Formula Shell I had in my car. He reminded me of when I was younger. Late teens early twenties and probably not paying the most attention to his car just yet. I have been there done that.
I also gave a lady and a guy a quart of my Castrol Magnatec 5w30 out of my five qt container at a nearby 711. Old old van... He also needed coolant so I gave him my whole full container of Prestone. Speaking of which I need to get another of them for my car to replace the one I gave to him. They were really cool and obviously needed it, so it wasn't a problem at all. I tend to carry extra motor oil and coolant in my car just in case. But in general I usually give it away over time. Which is cool.
I am quite sure many of you all have done the same.

I never gave oil to a stranger. I have given oil to a neighbor who was down a quart.

Yep; gallons of it as well as filters--right here on BITOG. In fairness though, they are no longer strangers.

Never to a stranger, even though I carry it with me (1 qt new in the car, 2 qts (1 new, 1 "used") in the truck). Just never have seen anyone needing any.
Family and neighbors, all the time. My sisters husband always seems to be a qt low (I make my daughter check oil on family cars when we have get-togethers), he gets the used oil if just a qt low.
And when I say used, it is the oil from the wifes Scion, a gently used synthetic oil (currently PP 5w-20) with ~5000 miles on it. I save it specifically for top off oil for my truck (1 qt every 1500 miles).

agree.
but some people that look like bag people have 2 state retirement checks coming in, they just hide their money.

I haven't given oil to a stranger but I have changed oil for numerous family members over the years (usually on my dime). I stopped doing it a few years ago when I felt that it wasn't appreciated enough....if at all.

Yep, and some never even knew I did it.
I give a burger or an Arizona tea sometimes to the guy standing at the light on Kingshighway.
Our local grocery chain has a reward program that donates to charity. I hand the checker the card every time.
I've needed help at times, and always got it from somewhere. Really, in many cases, helping out is just what we should do.
And while I agree that some folks do hide their good fortune, when I give, it isn't about them. It's always me thinking "what if?"
I don't give cash. If they can trade a cheeseburger for a bottle of ripple, then they are working harder than I am. Rock on.

beanoil=Good man oil

i was moving from a house to a smaller apartment, so i give to one of the metal guys (loades to the gills Ford truck):
-3 gallons of Prestone
-2 gallons of penzoil 10w30
he looked at me funny, he must have thought it was really old or used oil... Nope, brand new, only hold one year in my garage's shelfs....

gave some windshield wipers to somebody at work (for my sold elantra; he had the same car); guy was really surprised...

i gave some cervezzas frio/cold beers to the painters (i'm not much of a drinker) crew, even if they didn't do much of a good job to the outside of the building/garage door...

Two tenants in the apt building I live in have gifted me oil and ATF in the past.
In one situation the owner purchased a newer car, and another because he was moving down to 'frisco.

I think it's mostly because I'm the only tenant in the building who they might spot doing an OCI on one of his machines.

I'll never forget those guys, and will remember to gift others oil when I have the chance.

I don't give material goods away, I haven't moved to that level yet. But I give way in traffic, hold doors for people, smile to let strangers know I'm not an ax murderer, return my grocery cart. It is not the giving so much as it is letting a person know they are regarded, not just obstacles. Since I started doing that, I feel better about myself too. So up to a point, just as the collection plate passes by, " "tis better to give than receive"

I dont give money to strangers. And I dont give products, that cost money, to strangers either.

People are suspicious of overly friendly people that want to give you something, for free.

Many years ago I worked with a fellow that was crying the blues he didn't have the money for an edger. I had a spare so gave him one. Month later he was bragging about how much he got when he sold it. Have never given anything again. Lesson learned.

This comes up a lot. Technically once you give something away, you have no rights to how it's used afterwards. But not giving him anything else later is fine. The receiver really needed to just keep their mouth shut.

I don't give money to many people at all.. one guy playing a guitar yesterday hangs out and plays for money. It was 78°F sunny and beautiful yesterday. He is NEVER out there when it is raining and say 50°F or colder. That's garbage. At least if the guy showed up in bad weather playing his guitar for money then I would be impressed. Dedication to the cause.
We have a couple who show up wanting money as well. It is sad and I strongly believe they are bad off on drugs. They don't get any money either. The likelihood of me giving someone money on the street is now zero. If in all probability it will be used to buy alcohol or injectable drugs then I don't want any part in that.

Can you stop by the next time I need to change the oil in my pickup? I'll be needing 14 qts of CJ4.
