I decided to go with John Deere this time. CI4 rated oil 15w40 for my 2007 5.9. Have run nothing but Blue in it ( CJ) Want to see if the JD really protects better and is worth the 4.00 more a gallon!

I don't think you'll find it will protect any better...or worse. It's high quality stuff just like many top name brands we see on the market.
But, then you get to run the stuff of your choice with all the ZDDP that you like so much, Roper.

Not sure who makes John Deere oil now. I believe it's either Mobil or Chevron. It's a good oil, no better or worse than the others.

I know its Esso in Canada...has the three star logo on the bottom of the bottle. Not sure about the US

I see that on my jug of the JD it says CI-4 rated. On the JD website it says CI-4+ rated. I wonder if I got old stock or what. Either way, My truck calls for CI-4 oil,

Personally I would rather run the CI-4 oil on a pre 2003 engine any day. Cheaper and as a matter of opinion I think its a better oil class for the job at hand.
A couple years ago I did a VOA on Deere's 0w-40 Syn HDEO and it was absolutely pathetic in terms of AW additives, and didn't even resemble a HDEO. I am sure it is floating around here somewhere but I was very disappointed in it and have not used it once I used up the bit I had of it.

Next time you might want to consider a 15w40 CI-4 from Case-IH called No.1. Suppose to be a good oil what what I have researched and cheaper ($66.00 per 5 gallon pail) compared to JD Plus 50 ($80.00 per 5 gallon pail). Prices are from the local Sacramento implement dealers to give you an idea even though you live in Southern Calif.
I did find some Delo 400 CI-4 at a oil distributor here locally for ($70.00 per 5 gallon pail).

CJ-4 is the newest spec. CI-4 is okay, CI-4 Plus is newer and better. CJ-4 is best.
It would not make sense for John Deere to introduce a CI-4 Plus oil in May 2009, approximately one year after everyone else phased out CI-4 Plus in favor of CJ-4.

I used Case IH no. 1 15w40 even when I worked at the john deere place.
Now that have a Cummins 6.7 ltr I use Schaeffer's suppreme 9000 5w-40.

Seems pretty potent.. Maybe they changed the formulation since you used it?
