GF's dad says Mobil 1... I say Amsoil... who's right?

My girlfriend's dad says that Amsoil is a waste of money and Mobil 1 is good enough for my purposes (2000 VW GTI VR6, daily driver some bouts of spirited driving, the occasional tire screeching 4 grand clutch drop/200+kph top speed runs, etc...) should be autocrossing with it next year.

I'm not a big fan of mobil 1, i've heard bad things about the lead content and the new tri-synth formula is supposed to be crap. I can't really back up my claims, even after searching the forum I couldn't find any good info for this debate... So what are the current opinions on this topic?
 
Truth is both oils are about equal. If you do autocross the 5w-40 truck suv Mobil 1 would be best for that application. Both oils are excellent so take your pick.
 
Geeeez...you must be young. If you want to run Amsoil and the girlfriend is hot, then run Amsoil, tell the dad you're running M1, and reap the benefits. This is about as close to a no-brainer as I've seen

"new" tri-syn formula??? think tri-syn went away with the SJ rated oils in the late 90's. Granted today's version is a reformulated verision of tri-syn, but c**p??? opinion's are like c**p, everybody has some
 
I'd say use whatever type of oil you want, and tell the GF's dad what he wants to hear. I agree with lyle....tisk tisk. To be young and inexperienced...again!!!

But what if the dad insists on a UOA? ie: he's a BiTOG'er?

Better him insisting on a UOA, I guess, than an AIDS test. Just run M1 and be happy; there is nothing to be gained really by running one instead of the other.
 
what's more important, SEX or being right about motor oil?
buy the old man a case of Mobil 1, the MIL a dozen roses and be happy. you will learn that girls ALWAYS believe their daddys even after they are married.
this argument can cost you dearly.
keep a partial bottle of Amsoil in the back of the VW but fill the crankcase with what you want.
ok, and get a legal pre nuptial, you are going to need it.
 
Well, Justin ..as Doug Hillary will tell you ..there's no such thing as "magic oil". Some will do better in some applications than others ..but mostly, in a feature for feature shoot out, you're down to preferences.

So far, the most informative opinions in this topic are in terms of interpersonal relations managment (an often overlooked and under appreciated discipline). Remember, in all matters of dispute, whether it be oil selection ...or the settling of union greivences ..to border skirmishes.. you have to understand that "winning" may include added costs that outstrip the thrill of victory.

I recommend diplomacy 101. Let the Wookiee win

My vote is for the Amsoil. I've used them all and there is nothing slicker!

That said, I say M1 for dad, SX-UP for the girlfriend!
