GF-5 & ConocoPhillips Products

I had a brief conversation with an unnamed source about the upcoming GF-5 and ConocoPhillips motor oils. When I mentioned that I had been recently buying a couple of cases of Kendall GT-1 FULL Synthetic 5W20 (Actually, it was Motorcraft - but I didn't say that), the source said the following - which I did not know:

1) You know, the GF-5 Kendall GT-1 Blend 5W20 which comes out in the fall of this year, will functionally, be the equivalent of the Full Synthetic you are buying now.

2) The GF-4 Kendall 5W20 FULL Synthetic you are buying now, just about qualifies as a 0W20 (on a cold cranking basis).

3) The Kendall GT-1 Ultimate 5W30 and 10W30 (Corvette and Acura HTO spec oil) will be eliminated, to be replaced by the upcoming GM Dexos oils. There will be a Dexos motor oil in both 20wt & 30wt viscosities.



Since I had been buying my 2 cases of Full Synthetic at a $2.95/qt clearance price at Advance Auto Parts, I wonder if the smart thing to do is to wait for the new GF-5 stuff to appear on the market rather than build a GF-4 stash at these prices for a 2010 Ford Focus?

We sure are living in a golden age with all these new products coming to market and decisions to make as to what to buy. What do you buy, a Dexos 20wt or a GF-5 Kendall GT-1 Full Synthetic 5W20 - AND HOW MUCH WILL IT ALL COST? Anyway, I thought y'all would want to know whats coming - and whats going.

The SB GF5 may be more than the FS GF4 you are buying on sale.
Its already $2.77 at WalMart for MC SB GF4.

Functionally equivalent in all ways? IE Extended Drains?

Good to know they are doing it that way. Makes more sense IMO. Those should be very good oils.

"Lower viscosity GF-5 oils, such as 0W-20 or 5W-20, will require lubricant formulations to incorporate more Group III Base Oils, which include other additives, such as polyalphaolefin and molybdenum disulfide, in viscosity modifiers (VMs) and pour-point depressants (PPDs)" ( Motor Magazine, 2/2010).

Also was told the same thing recently by a Quaker State source that GF-5 will require Grp III, probably PAO in low viscosity formulations. I don't know if it is true about PAO, but GF-5 is going to require better base fluids.

Motorcraft oil is looking even more attractive when it is GF-5.
