Getting a quote for new siding today.

I used Hardie Plank on a section of my house, that previously had wood plank that was falling apart. Front of the house, and entryway, from the window line down to the ground.
Nailing/screwing through it scared me, so each hole was pre drilled. A nail gun would have helped, but we got by.

Got another quote...$29,000. But additional $3750 for the Azek J Pocket 5/4x4" window and door trim. Also want to add 5" gutters on both sides but I don't think gutters are too expensive.
Still waiting on 3-4 other quotes.
But $9000 less is significant.
I try any rely on referral from others in the building trade. There are a lot of things that need to be done with siding and roofing properly so you won't have an issue 20 from now.

I've had Hardie plank siding in a windy coastal location for 21 years. Be aware that if your home moves even slightly during high winds, with age the Hardie plank can break or crumble along exposed edges like a roofline. I had to replace some of mine after 17 years, and that was unexpected.

I have Hardy Plank - 11 years. Its pretty windy here also, but were pretty sheltered. Had the house painted a year ago and there was nothing that needed replacing - so I was lucky. The neighbor who is at the end of the street - far more exposed as the coastal winds can run right down the street and hit his house straight on - just replaced quite a bit of their Hardy Plank.

Having said that I had vinyl at the last place and really didn't like it at all - it fades. I think you can paint it but that sort of defeats the point IMHO.

Another lesson I learned from Hardie plank is that the installers must paint any exposed end cuts to keep them from absorbing water or moisture, which can cause the ends to swell and fail prematurely. This can occur along a sloped roof.

No, it's decided. CertainTeed Carolina Beaded. Azek 5/4x4 trim for windows and doors, whatever the CertainTeed house wrap is, CertainTeed T3 soffit, new 5" gutters and downspouts, board and batton for the peak.
Coming in initially at about $34k.

That's common with wood siding as well. Actually wood siding should be painted on all 6 sides.

Got another quote this AM. $18,000 plus $5500 for the Azek window trim, plus $1500 for 5" gutters and 2 downspouts.
So $25,000 all in. Guy prefers 30lb felt/tar paper vs. the Tyvek synthetic type. I'm good with that. But $13,000 less than the first quarter and about $10k less than the second.
