GeorgeCLS "TESTING" Mobil 1

Hi TeeDub,

I think the PAO shortage is more related to the availability of the 1-decene feedstock than the manufacturing capacity. The market is tight but PAO is available, just at a higher price.

BTW, if no one has said it yet, welcome to the forum!

You clearly know a lot about lubricants and the industry.

Hi Sub,

1-decene is an alphaolefin built up from ethylene. Ethylene is not short but there are other applications for 1-decene.

The non-EP 0w30, 5w30 and T&S5w30 still have the -54C pour point, so maybe these are still PAO.

Local branch office of an industrial lubrication company had several cases of Mobil 1 0w30 SL formulation on hand. When I indicated I required SM formulation they had a case of it ready for pickup the following day.

During the course of our conversation when I came in to pickup the SM the next day, branch rep indicated his source at Mobil said there are only minor differences between the SL and SM formulations of Mobil 1 0W-30.

If your logic is right, and the Mobil 1 Extended Performance is for extended performance, then what does that say about PAO's if Mobil 1 is not for extended service?

"Extended performance" doesn't mean "best performance" or on par with Mobil 1. It simply means the EP oils are capable of extended drain. This doesn't mean Mobil 1 oils are not even more capable of extended drain than EP oils. "Extended performance" may well be in comparison to Group II and Group II+ oils.

Sorry, I worded it wrong. If Mobil 1 Extended Performance is group III and Mobil 1 is PAO, what does that say about hydrocracked synthetics and Polyalphaolefins? The gap would be narrowed between the two. Though I, like others, doubt that Mobil 1 is PAO based.

I hope he is staying off the motorcycles.

My sick humor aside I hope he is alright. But it has been excessively long in hearing at a minimum a progress report.

The results you get from a Gas Chromotography scan are hard to argue with from a technical standpoint, so I'm not sure what if anything Mr. Morrison can add to the data that has already been generated?

As a side note, the viscometrics of the regular Mobil 1 and the Mobil 1, EP are almost identical. So it's a safe bet that both of these oils are using almost identical basestock blends and a variation of the same add pack.

I'm sure the Mobil 1, 0w30 racing oil was and is a PAO basestock, as are their expensive Motorcycle oils and the Delvac 1, 5w-40. But their commodity products sold at Walmart have all gone the Group III route....

That M1 SL 0W30 is actually some really good stuff. Do what I did and buy it from them cheap like you are doing them a favor.

It is beyond me why George doesn't just say, "yes, I am still alive and I am awaiting the results." His failure to answer concerns me. I suppose it is the holiday season and he may not spend as many waking hours on this site as some of us. But c'mon, George, say something.

Does anyone think the reported excessive oil consumption with M1 is due to the Group III? Or, could it be bc 65% of the synthetic market is Mobil 1? The Noak is 8% according to the Amsoil box. Amsoil ASL is 7.14%. I would think the Noak would be higher for the M1???

Care to be more specific of what you mean by "really good stuff"?
