By the way, I called on a major oil company yesterday and asked if they were aware that M1 was now using Group III and they smiled and said yes. Don't expect any major, however, to make a public issue of it. That's not the way they play.

That's sure the way Mobil "played" when Castrol switched from PAO to Group III.

Hi G-Man,

Mobil had a lot at stake, including the very definition of "synthetic". Oil companies will take legal action against each other whenever they feel that a claim is not justified, but they will not take public pot shots over such things as base oil changes, especially when Group III is considered "synthetic".

Does ankylated naphthalene fluoresce under UV light?

Hi Oilyriser,

I have never looked, but many additives do fluoresce, including the amine anti-oxidants in many formulations, so such testing would not be specific enough to be meaningful. G.C. is really the only way I know of to clearly see the base oils and identify them.

I'm trying to think up a way someone might be able to test an oil with household materials, but if a PAO spike is in the middle of the mineral oil peak, it'll be very hard to resolve with paper chromatography, even if there is a way to make the oil spots visible.

Video conferencing?
So they read BITOG too!!

thanks to Tom NJ for stepping up to the plate of scientific truth in base oils used...he took a serious career risk

Once i use up my old stash of M1 I will have bought my last Mobil 1 motor oils until XOM decides to come clean and have some Truth in advertising....
can't take the chance of engine destruction with 10k>15k miles OCI's on a pseudo SINthetic aka Mobil 1 PCMOs because of their finacial loss makeup from Katrina and Gulf of Mex. setbacks
if I wanted a GrpIII for 5k>7k OCIs, i would buy Commie Wart's version of M1

Yes, thanks Tom NJ for your contribution here and probably everywhere by now or later hehe.

In my opinion, i'd test the regular most recent batch of Mobil 1 5w30 SM you can find (preferably November 06 or so). The regular stuff is the most commonly used.

I would welcome independent verification to get me off the hot seat!

Tom NJ vs Guido the Neck...

"Hello sir, can I help you?"

"Mebbe, yeh, I wuz just lookin' for de man in charge of dis here operation."

"That's me."

"I see. Den yous is surely aware of what de Boss thinks of recent events."

"Recent events?"

"I is not clear on the details. But de Boss says yous has been saying some nasty things about his Mobil 1."

"Well, my GC graph shows that..."

"Save it. De Boss is not happy."

"Oh. But it's plain to see that there's group III..."

"P'raps I can explain dis as a kind of spectral interference or overlap between chemical constituents of similar makeup, thus causing difficulties in producing a correct interpretation?"

"No no, I'm quite sure..."

"I see, yous want I should explain dis with my brass knuckles instead."

"Er, no, I'd rather not..."

"Cuz I'd hate to do that. Safety is important in a lab such as dis."

"Yes yes, that's right."

"Espec'ly wit all dese here flammable chemicals yous is analyzing."

"Very much so."

"De whole place would probably go up in smoke wit' one carelessly dropped match, know what I mean?"

"Er..."

"Anywayz I is glad we had dis discussion. I'm sure de Boss can expect to hear yous to make a correction on your earlier remarks?"

"Look, I'm telling you I saw..."

"Cause de Boss reminded me to tells yous about the concrete blocks and chains I's gots in the truck if yous should forget to do so."

"Right. Uh. Spectral interference, you said?"

"Dat is correct."

"Got it."

"Yous is a real smart guy, Mr. Tom NJ."

So I will be off this morning to purchase a quart of Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30..... It would seem that this viscosity is the concensus;I will try and find a recent now that I am armed with the yardarm coding, thanks to this site!

I think I have heard enough to switch to PP in my vehicles and Redline in my bike. However, this i really interesting. Thanks to all of you for this testing. I spoke with 2 labs today an they did remark that the tests to determine PAO from GPIII are difficult and very specific and need to be done by experts in that area. So good luck.

Please done't assume North Jersey and South Jersey are alike. They aren't! LOL.

Lots of "EyeTalians" around here though too...I'm 1/2.
