I vote for Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 or regular Mobil 1 5w30.

George is doubtful of the original test. If confirmed by a second test, we can all be reassured. 5w30 is one of the more popular weights, I think that would be a good choice. Good for you, George. A re-test is an exceptional way to cool down this debate.

Admittently, I have little knowledge of GC testing proceedures, but of what value is running additional tests if the results are too difficult to accurately interpret?
 
didn't he say he was going to find out about the NA additive in mobil 5000 too. nothing came of it.
 
I would test Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 for two reasons:

1) That was the grade Tom tested.

2.) Probably the most popular Mobil 1 Extended Performance grade.
 
Cutehumor, I was the one that was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that put me completely out of comission for many months, thus no NA resolvement... Please give me a bye on that..
I will forward the sample tomorrow. The lab is a busy one and the lead time is 2 weeks on arrival at the lab..
But they are excellent and have no affiliation with any oil company.

Doing just fine now, thank you.
I spoke a bit soon and wanted everyone's input on Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30. It is the only broken case of Mobil 1 we currently have in stock. Hate to break a new case; hopefully this will suffice as the base stock formulation should be the same for 5W and 10W.

Is it a recently produced bottle? Or one from 6 months ago? I think the production date comes into play.
 
I agree, George see what the date is. It's very important you don't send them a Katrina version. Preferably I'd use the most up to date bottles you have. I'll pay for it if $ is an issue. Glad to hear you're doing ok from the MC accident. I've been thinking of getting a bike but after reading about many of the people on here and their experiences with them, I'm going to pass...
 
I would be willing to bet that the most commonly used Mobil 1 on here would be the regular 5w30, not the EP 5w30. So my vote would be to test the regular Mobil 1 5w30.
 
I say test the EP 5w30 (or 10w30 since GeorgeCLS already has a broken case). Simply because the last test we saw was on EP 5w30. We need to compare apples to apples.
 
It's probably easy to see if an oil has no mineral oil, but to say a mineral oil has no PAO should be very difficult, since the wide band of mixed hydrocarbons would hide the peaks of the PAO.

hmmm... maybe an atomic force microscope scanning a very dilute layer of oil could be used to actually count the molecules, if you have lots of time
 
Need help on the bar coding/date of fill. The Mobil 1 bottle reads "X03H6 5501" Hopefully someone can interpret this in terms of fill date.??

Hi Buster,

I tested the 5w30 EP version from an October 2006 lot. To verify the results you should try to do same.

The C30 portion of PAO comes off the G.C. dead on top of the mineral oil cut, as does the AN. This is not a problem, however, to one skilled in interpreting motor oil G.C.s as the peaks are additive, that is, they do not cover one another but pile on top of each other so that all remain visible. They should also run pure AN, pure PAO (4 cSt), and mineral oil as references as we did, which will make the interpretation more clear. If they have a problem, ask them for the G.C. curves and either post them or fax to me and I'll help. I would welcome independent verification to get me off the hot seat!

I also talked to an independent lab today specializing in motor oil analysis. They have a huge library of G.C. curves on virtually every motor but provide them to clients without interpretation. They said will also run the 5w30 EP and hopefully send me the graph, but I doubt they will post anything here.

By the way, I called on a major oil company yesterday and asked if they were aware that Mobil 1 was now using Group III and they smiled and said yes. Don't expect any major, however, to make a public issue of it. That's not the way they play.
