"high-failure rate heat exchanger & blower motor w/o having to pull the dash @ $900 in labor"

Willy, you have a rich fantasy life!

"All-New Volkswagen Jetta 2.5 Named "Best Premium Compact Car" July, 2005

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The recently released all-new Jetta is already collecting accolades. SmartMoney magazine crowned the Jetta 2.5 as its "Best Premium Compact Car" in their August 2005 issue. Compared to its competition, the Jetta was deemed the best over-all value because of its refined ride, spirited handling, and thoroughly designed interior appointments.

Remarking on the Jetta's driving dynamics, SmartMoney stated, "On the road, the Jetta's handling is crisp and precise; the suspension and chassis isolate the driver from bumps and keep the car firmly planted."

With regards to the interior, they went on to say, "The Jetta has numerous touches…that come as delightful surprises in a midprice car."

Keeping with Volkswagen's tradition of well-executed interior design, SmartMoney noted, "The layout of the controls is simple and logical..."

The all-new 2005 Jetta has a base price of $17,900. Complimenting the Jetta's dynamic driving characteristics and thoughtful engineering is a long list of standard features. With five-year/60,000 mile powertrain and four-year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage (which ever comes first), and four years of free roadside assistance, the new Jetta offers a worry-free driving experience. In addition, the new Jetta is available with a TDI diesel engine capable of 36 mpg city/41 mpg highway."

a) 41 MPG for a diesel of that size SUCKS!!! I bet the honda diesel version of the euro accord (TSX) does a LOT better.

I agree 41 mpg on the highway for a diesel Jetta sucks seeing the Toyota Corolla gets 41 mpg on the highway.Might as well buy a Corolla as they look the same!

Since the Passat has been reverted to the B4 transverse engine set-up, it is now just an over-priced, stretched Jetta???

Given their current quality ratings & the failed Phaeton venture, I would have to wonder if $30k-$40k 'large Jettas' are going to sell?

More things to break:
- Moving headlights...hopefully it won't go wall-eyed at just out of warranty! MB did this loooong ago. Where are they with it now?
- Umbrella in door. Why?
- Climate controlled glovebox. Again, why? Maybe the duct is the access point to replace the high-failure rate heat exchanger & blower motor w/o having to pull the dash @ $900 in labor. (Maybe VW engineers Googled "blower motor steak knife" and had a momentary period of rational thought?)

It will be neat to see how VW tries to turn around over the next few years.

I agree with buying a Corolla over a Jetta. Same look, good fuel economy, less initial cost, and a tad more reliability.

I've owned 3 VW's and while they are nice cars the prices for parts are crazy.I just got my second BMW and find the part prices to be less overall.

VW Jetta's are waaay overpriced!

Alan,

I agree... Ive been very happy with the costs of parts for my MBs and BMW... my saab can have parts, from the dealer for very fair prices... Ive been very impressed.

I have heard that VW parts are $$$, but never had firsthand experience.

right, but it claimed US specs, and then cited 91 octane pump fuel as having reduced performance... Id think they would use the right numbers... 98 euro octane is about 93 here in the US, right?

Sounds like VW is just as clear about their fuel requirements as they are about their oil requirements. Give me a break! It's too bad VW can't get their act together because I think they make decent looking cars.

Believe it or not, when I moved to a small town a few years back, my neighbors thought my old VW Scirocco was "That car from Back to the Future"!!! It made me laugh.

I love my Scirocco. My wife won't let me get rid of it. It is an early '83 with the small rear 'wing' and single front wiper, leather, cruise, etc... Nice car for '83. A lot of the mechanicals are still OE!!! Then VW lost their focus.

I had a Mars red 1980 model and a tornado red '89. If you see a mint Mark II, it still won't look dated, although the last Mark II was built in '92. By the way, Sciroccos were not built in Wolfsburg like most other VWs, but they were assembled at the Karmann coach factory in Osnabrück.

Rolls Royce has umbrellas in the doors.

I always liked the old scirocco styling. Origami at it's best.

Unfortunately the trend died off and we got jelly beans with rice-inspired tail lights.

I'm not surprised. The DeLorean and Scirocco (Type 53/Mark I) were both designed by Giugiaro. I had both, an MK I and an MK II.
