Gear oil safe for use with bronze bushings?

I'm rebuilding the transmssion on a vintage Maytag washing machine and have become aware that Gl-5 gear oil may attack or corrode its bronze bushings.

Is this true and if so what gear oil would be compatible with bronze and yellow metals?

if your washer bushing doesn't see a lot of shocks (no need for EP additives), then using standard monograde SAE30 of recent API grade should do just fine.

As for the difference between GL4 and GL5, it only matters to (a ) full-synchromeshed gearboxes, and (b ) both GL4 and GL5 comes with buffered sulphur additives.

Contrary to most general public's ignorance: GL5 comes with less friction modifier so it's not really that backward compatible with GL4-spec'ed gear box. That's it!

I lube washer bushings, etc. with standard monograde motoroil.

I don't think it sees any shocks.
However, Maytag trans oil is 90w and changing it involves tearing apart the whole machine, not a simple task, so I'd prefer to get the right stuff, or at least as close as possible, in there the first time.
 
NAPA sells a an SAE 90 GL1 gear oil for use in older gear cases with bronze parts such as old Borg Warner 3 speed with overdrive transmissions. You can also use SAE 40 or 50 engine oil as a replacement. Fuller Roadranger trasnsmissions in large trucks also use an SAE 50 oil meant for transmissions which is available at lubricant suppliers that sell to truckers.
 
Buffered gear oils don't corrode the yellow metals, but leave a deposit that can flake off, taking metal with it.
But for you, it is your best bet - use a buffered gear oil - they are very common.

I would think that would depend on the specific gl-5 oil.

if you get something rated for rear end with LS.. its obviously going to be a whole different oil than one designed for a MT/diff application.
 
Just get Chevron Delo Gear or Ultra Gear. They are borate EP gear oils that have no chemical reaction to metals.
