GC or Redline for my 01 E55amg

After much thought and deliberation, I changed my oil in my 01 e55 to GC. A good choice it seems, as I am currently getting outstanding gas mileage on freeway trips (approximately 23.5). My question is this: knowing that Gc is a thick 30 weight, is it adequate to protect my engine? I am contemplating trying Redline 5w40 here in a couple days and was wondering if it is worth switching....I definately want the best oil for the car as it has 90k on the odometer and needs to be babied as much as possible.

Second question in regards to the GC/ Redline quandry... Would the engine in a 98 Toyota 4runner with 155k like the GC composition? Currently I am running Redline 5w30 and it seems to run extremely quiet. i just switched the oil over to synthetic when I purchased the car at 145k. i had a dose of Redline 5w30 in the engine for a good 10k to to facilitate the cleaning process. I assume that the oil pulled some #@$%! out of the engine in that it came out extremely dark. I hope this is a good thing. I am guessing that a 10k oil interval with GC or Redline would be ok. I am trying to marry these two engines with therir optimal oil. I encourage those with oil experience and knowledge to chime in and assist me. Thanks.
 
I have used both oils but have far more experience with Redline. GC is no longer available at AZ, so be prepared to internet order it, or have a Canadian pal ship it to you.

Redline 5w-40 is pancake syrup, I would not use it, it is way to thick. Redline 10w-40 is also very thick. I would stick with Redline 5w30 or GC. If you insist on a 40 weight for some neurotic reason, Amsoil 5w-40/Mobil 1 0w-40 would work fine in both instances. But so would Redline 5w30. In fact I use Redline 5w-20 in both my cars. One calls for 5w30, the other for 0w-40 and the used oil analysis have been stellar despite driving at wot everywhere I go.

Just to repeat, the Redline 5/10w-40 is like pancake syrup mixed with glue. Try for yourself if you must, but the drag on the motor is extreme. Might be dandy if you like to motor brake though.

You may want to check out this link as MB doesn't like 30wt oils in the AMG engines.

I'd use Mobil 1 0W-40 which I recall is AMG approved. It is certainly MB 299.5 approved. GC is a fine choice too but I personally would not use Redline which I'd only reserve for racing use. I think for street use there are better oils than Redline.

I don't get this; this must be regional. The 3 Autozone's I visit in the greater Denver area always have an ample supply of the "Made in Germany" 0W30 Castrol Syntec. Last month when it was on sale, I purchased 20 quarts and had no issues finding it. Granted, it isn't the "green" stuff [the batches were M02, M05, M06] so perhaps that is what the quote is in reference to.
 
Last month it was still available here to, not now. The place on the shelf is gone, in every AZ in the SF Bay Area. I'd be willing to bet if you went back to the AZ in your area you would find the same. AZ told me it was a national decision. The sale last month was the last of it. However, being the CO. gets those low temps, it might be that they will still make it available in your area.

As for us, we are SOL.
 
It's not available at the AutoZones around here either. I've actually never seen it in stock there, or a shelf space dedicated to it. Probably not a big demand over here or something.

I'd give an eye tooth to have Redline 5 or 10W40 locally available. I'm certainly not ordering anymore oil.
 
Yes, some 30 weight oils are acceptable (eg. Elf, Castrol). These are ACEA A3 rated. GC is completely acceptable...or Syntec 5-40. I've used both. Love the 5-40 more.
 
Maybe I am biased because Redline is a local company, just a hop, skip, and a jump away.

It might very well be that other brands serve the needs of street cars better. But I have had good results with it. There is a huge disparity in viscosity however from the 5w30 to the 5/10w-40's.

There does seem to be a general prejudice against Redline on this board, I am not sure why. I have read that they use too much Moly, that Esters are not optimal for street use or necessary, and that the race oil is good but not the street oil (which is repeated here) I also frequently read that it is not good for extended drains. All I can say is that it works for me, but then again, so do a lot of other oils. Maybe the prejudice has some root in the price of Redline, at 6.95/qt. it is not cheap. I think though that it probably has something to do with the initial UOA looking poor, for some reason beyond my knowledge, Redline used oil analysis didn't seem to look good for me until the 3rd run. Maybe folks are giving up on it to early?! Of course not being API is a factor for a lot of people. I guess availability is a problem. In the Bay Area it is everywhere since it is a local oil. I don't work for Redline but I can't pretend it isn't working really well in my cars.

Is it expensive to order it? Where do you get it from?
 
Oh johnnyboy. For those of us who aren't a hope, skip, and jump away from the factory, redline is a tad pricey. I got it for $7.50 per quart plus shipping which came out to $50+ for one fill. If I could get Redline locally for $6, I would bathe in it. Lol, all I have is a Calumet Specialty Lube refinery nearby. Dang Sopus for selling it off!
 
Yeah, here in the Bay Area, the GC is pretty dried up. i do have 11 quarts left, so itll work for one change. When I spoke to the chemist at Redline, he suggested the 5w40. What about the Elf, Motul or Lubromoly products? I have never used these, but have wanted to try one. Basically, I am looking for the overall, best oil possible for this car. I am in the Bay Area, so I do not need anything extreme. The car is driven pretty much only on the weekends, and pushed a bit at times. I did just have the transmission fluid switched to Redline...That is smooooth.....

The Pennzoil Platinum 5w-40 can be had at the Pep Boys on Stevens Creek next to Frontier Ford.

I have never used Rotella synthetic 5w-40 but see it at Walmart. Every time I turn around someone has something positive to say about this oil.

If you are interested, I have 20 quarts of gold GC I will let you have at AZ price and will deliver them to your door. I see no reason to keep it with Redline available half a mile from my front door at 6.95. PM me if interested.

Well I have another couple of hours on the engine timer before I ship it off to Terry......then he will tell me how it is doing...but I will tell you the Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 is very smooth in the 408. Pressure and temps are great.
The 408 is a torque monster. Comes on at around 3000RPM and just does everything it can to twist the frame into a mass of metal:) We are tuning this morning and then are going to put her up on the dyno and see what we have. I'm not a fan of "dyno numbers" but want to look at the torque curve more than anything else. We have the KAZ 3.91 gears in the diff with Royal Purple...the trannie ( high dollar FinishLine StageV 4L65E) gets nothing but conventional Valvoline ATF.
