GC from day 1 ?

Looking at new 21-22" push mowers lately. Whatever I buy will have a Honda engine unless Cub Cadet comes out with a push mower larger than a 19" cutting deck (unlikely).

Would GC from day 1 be a good idea? It's thinner at start up, thicker when warm, and being PAO, can withstand the heat.

Good idea? Bad idea?

I'd just go with a straight 30 weight or a 15w40 HDEO. Why waste GC in a small engine without a filter? I prefer to buy an inexpensive oil for my ope and change it often.

You can run GC in it... but what happens when you run out?
Go ahead and a used oil analysis....
After GC runs out try some other exotic...

I agree use a 30w or a 15w40, i use Amsoil's ACD 10w30/30w
in my new rider, it's considered a strait 30..

See my thread asking about a synthetic in general. AMSOIL & B&S says you can w/o problem. However, AMSOIL also says why since you won't get any added benefit during break-in.

ben, thanks for pointing me to your topic thread. HDEO seems like the way to go for the first few hours of use. I have 1 qt of Amsoil 15w40 SJ blend on hand. I would imagine that this would be a good candidate in this application.

After my experience with a B&S engine that I purchased in 2002, I don't want to ingest gasoline any longer. Anything I can do to minimize ring wear/ring sticking would only help my lungs.

Not ashamed to admit I run GC in my Honda/Robin engines. I think it is a waste of good GC for break-in purposes. I change the oil after the first hour to get the "silver soup" out, at 5 hours, then 20 hours. After break-in, GC is a happy camper IMHO.

Agree with above, HDEO for break in.

I was lurking around the Honda EU site looking for part numbers and found the GC series service manual. In Europe Honda lists 15w40 and 20W-50 weights as acceptable oils to 100F ambients. Europe loves the heavy stuff.
