First question...is GC 0w30 VW rated 502.00? Second question assumimg it is I would like to try it in my new GTI 2.0T engine instead of Mobil 1 0W-40 what is the feeling of those in the field on this.

Now for the biggie. Assuming I want to go with the GC how in the heck do I find it? Can it be bought via the internet? My local AutoZone and Walmart never have it although I'm not totally sure what I'm looking for when looking for GC.

Thanks!

David

1. Yes

2. I've used both in my '00 VW 1.8T, & I couldn't tell any difference between the two.

3. You will only find GC at Auto Zone. They are the ONLY place in the USA that sells it, period. If you're local AZ doesn't carry it, try a neighbouring city. To find it, just look for Castrol Syntec 0w30, which must say "made in Germany" on the back. If it's made in the USA, it's old stock, & NOT GC.

Wow; I wasn't aware of that. I thought they only sold the 5w40. Cool.

Someone has posted that they had O'Reilly's Auto Parts order them 2 cases of GC 0w30. To their surprise it was GC Green vintage M0501. If your local O'Reilly's can order it for you I'd expect it to be Gold however unless you're really blessed by the Elves.

I would be surprised if the VW dealer carries GC, since it is not on the list of approved oils.

It does bear the 502 503 01 label on the back, and fromn talking to my cousins 0w30 is what they put in their VWs and BMWs (its called SLX there and now Long Tech).

Isn't it called Castrol Edge in the rest of the world now? The new formulations in the UK meet VW 504 00, which will eventually replace 502 00 and 503 01.

My friend need advise for his 2006 VW GTi. Now 1.000km already and want to change the engine oil. Use syn oil or dyno oil for current change? What's the factory fill? Synthetic, semi syn or conventional oil? When the best time to use syn oil? After 10.000 km? Thanks..

Check the book. It must be fully synthetic, meeting VW 502.00 for the GTI (or any new VW). GC claims to meet that standard, but be advised that VW recommends putting in 5w40 (with 0w40 or 5w30 also OK provided they meet VW 502.00). That means that technically, "Belgian" Castrol (now made in the US) at 5w40 is a recommended oil, as is Mobil 1 0w40.
