Good Afternoon folks. Since I’ve got back into working out thanks to 11 year old nephew who’s in his immature years. Plays football and slowly getting into lifting. Brother doesn’t really buy the Gatorade/apowerade atuff. He uses water
With some sea salt in it. He was interested in protein powder as well. I don’t know much on the subject. Do any of you folks use electrolyte powder or make your own?

I use gatorade or Sqwincher powder. I only use it when I'm golfing and walking miles in the hot sun or in Vegas when it's 115F and can never seem to catch up on hydration. Although, my body does not like excess electrolytes and will flush them out leading to more dehydration.

I currently prefer Liquid IV - Sugar Free. There are others on the market which are also sugar free. I prefer sugar free because I'm not using the drink to "go back out on the field" which is kind of the purpose behind Gatorade and others like it. I've noticed a number of new players in this market such as Pedialyte (sp?) so options are significant.

When I was an athlete in HS and Jr. High my favorite post-workout drink was a tall glass of milk on ice. Even during my college years I only drank Gatorade during games. Milk was still my post-practice/post-game beverage of choice.

I had the watermelon gatorade electrolyte powder and it was not the most pleasant taste. I just picked up the orange kind and hopefully it will be better.

Great Value Hydrate sticks are comparable

Many years ago I tried the Gatorade powders. While I'm sure it worked just as well as bottled, I could never get it to taste "right".

I used the Gatorade powder before and as chainblu just mentioned it didn't taste the same as bottled Gatorade. I buy Gatorade and Powerade in any store where I can get a good buy on it. Sams, Walmart, Costco etc. I think it really helps dehydration especially when I am out fishing in the boat on a hot day for 6-8 hours

Does he eat like the average 11 yr old? with tons of salt filled food? Then water is good. If he's eating good food then perhaps he could use some more electrolytes, but probably at 11 he shouldn't be hitting the weights so hard that he's sweating enough to need much. During a long hot practice though, in gear, I would think gatorade type stuff would be a good idea. Powder or bottled.
I always dilute gatorade to half strength and then I feel it hydrates better and is much easier to get down if I'm pushing hard on the bike.

He’s not lifiting real heavy. He’s eating ok except in brother and my opinion chocolate flavored protein powder and ice cream in a shake. He didn’t like my spinach, sweet potato, avocado and blue and strawberry shake. Brother loved it and we laughed at my nephew.

I play tennis and ride a bike and I use Mio Sport. I use it as much for taste enhancement as I do for Electrolyte replacement. The taste of water alone doesn't do it for me. I have suffered some nasty quad cramps over the years on the bike so I like to keep Electrolytes in me. Don't know if it's doing anything or just having a placebo effect, but if I believe it works.......

while in vietnam you ALWAYS sweat + salt tabs were available BUT always remember POTASSIUM is most important. older 76 yo + dont sweat much but i like + use DR Bergs rasberry + lemon Electrolyte Powder that tastes GREAT, NO sugar or bad substitutes just organic stevia. it has 1000 mg potassium citrate + as recommended by Dr Sten Ekburg you need electrolytes while fasting or even intermittent fasting as i do, gotta check labels for JUNK additives!!

Power Aid Zero for me. Supposed to have more electrolytes than Gatoraid and it tastes better. The tough guys drink pickle juice.

I use Powerade Zero as well. Here's the thing though, the vast majority of people who 'work out' aren't losing nearly enough fluids and electrolytes to need to consume salt drinks. Also most people are getting way too much salt already in their diet so again, salt drinks are not needed. I do around 1.5-2 hours of medium to high intensity cardio every morning so I sweat A LOT, and I use the Powerade once in a while, but I'm careful with my salt intake as well.

All this to say: unless you're doing a huge amount of sweating each workout and are very careful about the mount of salt you normally consume, you probably don't need electrolyte drinks, OP. I know the companies that make them make it seem like everyone should be drinking them who does any kind of exercise at all, but most people do not benefit from the drinks and can even consume too much salt drinking them if they're eating the typical American diet.
