Depends. If you call Gp III dino... yeah. Otherwise it was four quarts GTX and one qt Syntec, a mix that has worked VERY well for me over about six years.

I like your mix but your post has me confused. Are you saying regular GTX is Grp III?

No, the Syntec is Gp III. If you are one that thinks Gp III is "dino," then a mix of Gp III and II+ is still "Dino" and not a "syn-blend." Or, five quarts of Gp III is not a fill of "syn." I'm not afflicted with such a view but it's common enough.

Based on all this chatter I'm probably going to switch my 05 Silverado to a 20w next OCI.

I'm hoping for some sort of noticeable improvement.

You can mix it 50/50 to use up the remaining 5W-30 in your stash. That will give you a heavy 190 VI 5W-20 that's just as light on start-up as a light 5W-20 with the added benefit (although not entirely needed) of a heavy 20wt like Amsoil ASM 0W-20 at operating temp's.

Great thought, thanks. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

No I don't have that hang up either the way your post was worded I wasn't quite sure what you meant for certain, thanks!

I notice most HM oils are a little thicker then their non HM counterpart so I wonder, for people who want a HM oil without the extra viscosity should they go down a grade or mix 50/50 with a lower grade?

This would basically be doing the same thing. Maybe I could mix in a few Qts 5w-20 with 5w-30 of HM oil and maybe a full fill of 5w-20 HM for winter short trip usage instead of using the recommended 5w-30

Cheers to you for running GTX out for 10k miles. That's what I call making the most of your resources! I'm sure it was fine too and barely squeaked by on the TBN and additives. Oils can really go the distance these days, especially on highway miles like I do. I just don't have the patience to wait!! I could go to 10k on dino but...I must change at 4k! That is my itch!

Thank goodness we can recycle oil though, that helps some of our carbon footprint!

First why run a HM oil in the first place?
Is it for the additional seal swell additive to try and deal with an oil leak? If that's the case then just but a seal swell additive. There are a couple of brands, Gunk has one, that won't also thicken up the oil.

Because some of them have better additive packs than their "regular" counterparts. It's that easy.

exactly. sure I could add a ZDDP additive and a seal conditioner additive to a correct viscosity oil thats not HM or I could skip the additives ($$$), get the HM oil for the same price then all I have to combat is the extra thickness.since my sump takes 6qts I have room to mix in a thinner oil so I wonder why not use 5w-20 or atleast some 5w-20 since its all the same price anyway
