Changing rear diff in ford truck. Bought a gasket from advance and guy at counter says to use silicone with gasket on both sides of gasket. Is this really necessary. Why even buy a gasket if you gotta use gasket maker. Guy seems really knowledgeable but idk. What you guys think? Use both, just gasket,or just silicone?

Make sure the sealing surfaces are clean and grease the surfaces of the gasket then there is a good change the gasket can be reused. i have 4 oil changes on the rear diff on my wifes superduty, that is 90,000 miles.

I've used just the gasket maker (RTV) for differential cover; 2 vehicles, 5-6 years ago, no leaks. I've also used just the gasket by itself a year ago for one vehicle, no leaks.

I've also used a gasket with a super thin layer of RTV on both sides when I replaced a water pump, no leaks.

So... meh. I don't think it matters much as long as you install it correctly and torque it evenly.

Believe it or not, I have the same High tack, that's what I used when we did the HG on the Civic. Thanks for the info

Even when the factory procedure calls for RTV?

I've used a gasket. I've used silicone products like gasket maker.I never use both together. I use one or the other.

I agree, silicone on both sides of the gasket. Not a lot, just enough to cover the gasket and make it stick to the cover. A gasket by itself is much more likely to leak if the bolts are over tightened or the gasket shrinks over time.

Why? I've used silicone RTV on a gasket at least a couple hundred times with zero issues.

I'll tell you why ... because the silicone RTV will not bond to the gasket. You'll have a leak at the partition between the silicone and the gasket. RTV bonds to metal only.
