Gas VS Diesel longevity

Not really much of a penalty for passenger cars, particularly given the mileage they generally achieve.

Right now diesel is running about 60 cents a gallon higher than gasoline in this area. (It was just shy of a dollar higher in October). It is very likely that gasoline options will reappear in vocations they had lost popularity in. Garbage operations here are now switching to propane, even with the high inital investment, because it is cheaper than running diesel anymore. Given the high cost of the diesel option and tge more complicated systems due to tightening emissions, and it becoming tougher to claim better mileage wipes out the higher fuel cost, yeah, I can see some changing back.

good stuff. Yet in the rest of the world, diesel is cheaper. There was/is substantial capital cost to make ULSD vs 500ppm sulfur diesel. If they end up taking gasoline to 15 ppm or less, we can expect similar upcharges there too.

The whole situation is screwed up regardless of the reason, I see no reason why diesel should be more $.

My house is at 4000 feet, and where we camp is up to 8000 ft, so I know what you mean. One of the reasons I went from a gasser to a TD. Forced induction just does better at high altitude. I'd be interested in towing with an ecoboost around here to see how it would do.

Ha ha, you got me there! There are no older turbo/direct injection/gasoline powered pickup trucks.

The older 12V cummins (according to another thread) will actually start when it's really cold out.

Diesel is typically 15c/L more in Oz than petrol.

ATM it's only 3-5c...don't know why.

Ooops, today diesel was $1.509, E10 $1.369

Even with my 8c shopper discount, $90 for 63L...$91.80US for $16-2/3 gallons

Unfortunately everyone I know that has a current turbo diesel has a tuner add-on....and everyone I know that has a tuner add-on has experienced an engine or transmission failure or malfunction. They remove the tuner gear and take it in to get fixed when they can otherwise they pound thousands of $$$ into it and think they are still golden. Seems they are always in the shop. I remember 10 years ago, when people had turbo diesel trucks they boasted how trouble-free the operation was, the fuel economy was excellent etc etc it was impressive. There must be some results on the longevity of more current diesels, but finding one that hasn't been bagged &/or tweaked makes buying used a very risky venture.

Yeah, the tuners down here claim 8-10% more power over a stocker.

I called one, and asked how they could get more power with the same fixed boost, unless they were heading closer to stochiometric and engine problems.

They claimed that their tune was unique, and actually resulted in lower exhaust gas temperatures and longer engine life.

I laughed, requesting a copy of their new chemistry and physics texts.

However, it's a tuning problem, not inherently diesel.

A bad tuner can waste an L67 in moments, and a used buyer can't tell what's been fiddled with by prior owners.

I put an Edge tuner on our '99 Cummins, it made a huge difference, went from good to a total beast! I never turn it up past level 2, which is the tow setting. Also, Edge has electronics that will prevent engine damage, it de-fuels the motor if the EGT gets above 1300 degree's, ect. It also won't allow the turbo to boost until the motor is warmed up.

Peak power gains on level 2 are 60 hp and 200 ft lbs of torque. Its got 460 ft lbs stock.

A tuner is always risky. As long as you understand those risks then enjoy.

I run one on my Dmax, as long as you don't get carried away it's probably not going to cause too many problems.

If a factory warranty is in place NO WAY!
