Gas Prices in Cali - Suck

I paid $2.29 today in Terre Haute on my way back from Indy. Most places are in the $2.30's around where I live. They've actually come down 5 to 10 cents in the last week or so.

As for the higher wages, they may be moderately higher on average, but not enough to offset the tremendously higher cost of living in some of those places. I make a nice living, and the cost of living is very reasonable around here, so you can live quite comfortably in most areas of this part of the country. Heck, I've got five hourly union guys working for me, and most of them make nearly $100K or more a year. We have very low crime rate, pretty good to very good public schools, excellent parochial schools, excellent infrastructure, and a lot of genuinely nice folks. Nice new homes here go for $200-250K, VERY nice new homes from $300-400K. Can get darn near a mansion for $500K.

Oh, and I work at one of those awful, coal-fired power plants...one of the biggest in the country. I currently drive the V6 to work 100 miles RT every day, avg about 27.5 mpg. But with prices probably headed up, I'm planning on getting a beater car here soon to drive back and forth, something that gets better mileage and is cheap to maintain.

You folks in CA can have the beaches and nice weather year-round. I'm sure in many ways it's a great place to live. But for all the other b.s. you have to put up with out there, I'll just stay right where I'm at, with four seasons, happy, comfortable, and safe.

Youse bums.... awhile back I sought input.

I coulda' been havin' a frugal Corolla hunkered down in the driveway but....

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Youse guys declared that the full-size pick-em-up would fit my needs bestest.

I even MENTIONED the possibility of gas hitting 3 bucks or more in the not-too-distant future.

Well........ taking a cue from this group and that group and that bunch.... a whole lotta' groups (appears the USA is fragmenting among ethnic/racial/social/economic/various perversions groups) I hereby demand youse guys either chip in and help buy my gas or one or more of youse guys buy my truck so I can get that frugal Corolla that will get twice the mileage I get now.

I'll be awaitin' in the shanty for a suitable response.

Yep.

According to this Site, the gas tax is very high in Cali (44.7) and NY (43.9). I suggest you (and everyone else) write to your legislatures.

And these numbers are just the State tax, not including the Feds...

Yup. People get all upset over oil company profits which is actually LESS than the profit that the state makes on each gallon - with NO investment or risk mind you.

It makes sense to keep these things in perspective.

Yes but the government is our friend it is here to help us and redistribute our wealth to themselves and third world countries.

on the bright side gas is still cheaper then bottled water.

a pint of water is $.89 x 8 = $7.12, but nobody complains about that.

off topic, best place to buy water is at lowes or home depot, you can get a case of 24 1-pint poland spring bottles for $4, which makes it around $.17 a bottle.

In the not too distant future you'll look back and say, Gee... when gas was only $3.00/ gal., life was good. Here on the right coast its been creeping north to around $2.60/ gal. I see $6 sooner than later?

How else would you like to pay for roads? Oh, I know the answer, toll roads.

Yea, and you got to love it when the State Governor's cave into the Taxpayers and temprarily rool back gas tax. Great idea. Roads already underrepaired and states are already in debt. Then borrow money to fund the tax tax revenue shortage and maybe transfer it to the road department..maybe.

And the really nice thing is that as you lower the cost of gas there will be more driving which will send the gas right back up again and no tax is collected.

A shame that politicians can' raise gas tax and actually use that money to perhaps fund public transportation. Oh well..never happen.

I've finally given up on idea that oil barrel prices will fall and drag down lube oil prices. So I hunkered down and bought a case of Chevron for 89 to give me a year of OCIs in my oil stash.

Bring on $5 gas, I'd like to see light rail and other public transit start to make some headway.

Nice! Restrict the right of personal movement so government has control of where you can go...

LOL, good Lord, as if the government would be forcing you to ride public transit.
laugh.gif
Some of us would like a fast, efficient, environmentally sound mode of mass transit, however.

Long suburban commutes in personal inefficient vehicles is NOT sustainable living...

A personal insult to make your point...+1 for you, you rule the interweb. Most of my cars emmissions systems are in a box on a shelf in my garage....so, guess I am not really a tree humper after all.

When the majority of people stop using thier SUVs and trucks to do nothing more than haul their 2.5 kids around, then I will change my stance. Until then, I want $10 a gallon gas...no, $20
smirk.gif

Get off your soap box you tool

Do I operate a:
Small business...yes
Business truck...yes
expensive gas bill...yes
Do I still want higher gas prices...yes

I guess I am in the minority when I say gas prices need to be higher. About $5 a gallon sounds about right. Perhaps then the cali freeways wont be so congested with large SUVs and no load pickups.

The high cost of fuel is mainly do to government mandates, restictions and taxes. The high cost of fuel will cost ALL of us more in our everyday purchases and tremendously drive up the cost of living. I'm a small business person and need a full size pick-up truck for my business. You can only "pass on" so much in extra costs. So I should be "punished" to make you feel "ecologically clean"

? The public school education has been woefully inadequate in basic economics for at least the last 30 years it seems.

In July of 2006, Oil per barrel was $78.40 and gasoline prices in the Bay Area were around $3.05.

Now, oil is $58.30 (Nymex Bloomberg) and gasoline is $3.29 (or higher).

The President of the Western Petroleum Association gives us his unbiased (not) opinion as to why prices are up (Calif gas taxes and Calif standards), he's been smoking mushrooms if he expects us to believe that.

Each $1, up or down, in gas prices (California Task Force on Gas Prices) is supposed to translate to 2.4 cents. Therefore, gasoline in California should now cost $2.57...regardless.

In Denver and Colorado Springs gas everywhere is $2.49 a gallon. California charges 10 cents more in gas taxes than Colorado, so we should figure Bay Area gas should cost $2.59. Right? Wrong. Colorado has to have its gasoline transported from California refineries. Their gas
should cost more.

I guess we're the suckers in CA.

When i left Cali last May gas was 3.30 for 87 and when i got to Texas it was 2.80, what a killer deal. Now after seeing gas at 1.94 (the cheapiest till now) why bother going back home.

$2.28 and $2.29 today in Terre Haute. Unfortunately, it's all the way up to $2.33 in Evansville where I usually fill up.

Bill:

Do y'alls send all of that 'tricity to California for free or what...?

No, have you ever heard of providing your own power? In your own state?

My point is that California is contributing to your economy. Does Utah produce all of it's own gasoline, "in it's own state"?

It does.
thumbsup.gif

Up in Woods cross about 10 miles from downtown SLC are all the refineries.

We get all of our gas from crude from WY and UT. No middle east oil or gulf of mexico oil.

Thanks for asking.

We also produce all of our power from IN STATE power plants. (we know you don't)

Oh, We also get ALL of our water from local sources.

You sure do not. How do I know? Becuase we just had a big price increase due to supply since they are sending more to NV and CA.

Thanks!

California is doing NOTHING for us. Oh they build power plants in our state and cause us to have to go on a EPA plan for pollution. The cost of everything (power, water, fuel, Nat gas, etc) has gone up.

Reg unleaded has gone up another 13 cents a gallon MORE in the last 2 days.

Next...

Blending various fuel mixes for special markets is such a big waste. Taxes on fuel and even profits for oil companies at least goes SOMEWHERE, while refitting for every of dozens of custom blends is a net loss. In the spirit of this thread, metro area who want "special" fuel mixes should be paying ALL the premuim costs for the products to be produced `special` just for them. When that cost is factored in and passed along to residents, THEN we will see how badly the consumers want it. See what I'm saying? If production runs went purely to a generic fuel, costs would be X, and that's what Joe Regular consumer should pay and let the "activist" consumers pay X+ whatever difference in production costs are, not spread the cost out evenly for non-tree-huggers to bear their burden, which is likely the way the costs are amortized now.
