Gas jumped 64 cents a gallon.... Total rip off!

We dropped below $2.49 the last day or two, wassah dood

Sam's is currently 2.55 but a handful of other gas stations are sub-$2.50

Because it doesn't matter what companies charge for gas. Or food.

What are we doing to do, not buy it?
With all the gas price threads lately I have noticed a couple stations here toggle by a dime during the day. AM is cheaper. Usually there full of contractors. I presume they fill bigger tanks multiple times a week and maybe pay attention. By evening rush it’s back up a dime or so. I guess those stopping after work are less price sensitive?

This is in addition to the higher prices on weekends.

Maybe I’ll write a paper. The strategies and tactics of gas pricing.

Large SUVs and 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks are very common in Edmonton, a large urban city in farming and oil drilling country. It seems they are mostly used for in-city commuting.

A few years ago there was a gas shock. Prices soared overnight. So what did commuters do? The large SUVs and 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks largely disappeared from rush hour traffic. Commuters took the family's gas sipping small cars to work instead.

So there's that.

I filled up at a Speedway in Northwest Indiana on Sunday for $2.68/gallon (11-cent discount for my Speedy Rewards Card). If I went a little farther up the road, I could have saved another 4-cents/gallon.

Just pulled up the Speedway app and they did their weekly reset to $3.29/gallon..every station that comes up on my list.

Gas prices are controlled by the distributor. Any gas station that buys fuel from them in a given area must all sell at the same price. This is why you can go five miles away and see gas for 20 cents cheaper. It's price fixing.
I agree on the price fixing. Seems EVERY station, with the exception of a few, are all at $2.89/gal right now. And that seems to be in at least a 10 mile radius from The Shortyb compound. But I don't necessarily think it's the distributor doing it all. The 2 QTs within 2 miles of each other get delivered by the same tanker (same day, same cab number on the truck, same guy driving it etc.) but are .20¢ apart on price. I think the retailers are getting together and agreeing to a price so all are equally visited. Murphys seems to be the current exception with prices about .45¢ lower than all the "other guys". Obviously they know people need it, so they pay it.

I bought gas last week for 2.65 a gallon in mid Michigan. It is now 3.29 a gallon. I would always see 30-40 cent jumps which I think are still ridiculous. But this is by far the most outrageous jump. Why???
Yep, I watch the Marathon station in Lake Orion, MI go from $2.79 to $3.29 on a daily basis.
$2.79 in the morning, then $3.29 in the afternoon/evening.

Wife stops at Costco typically, Gas Buddy app shows $2.49 reported an hour ago. The spread is hilarious $2.25 to $3.39 within 10 miles of me.

Refining less gas and more fuel oil for upcoming winter?

Statically, the 12 month average of major accidents ( according to GROK AI ) for the last 30 years before the recent 12 months has been 0.9 per 12 months, but for the last 12 month has been 5.

Even taking iinto account a 20% invrease of production revently, ^ the recent 12 monts is a significant enough increase to indicate that something has changed.

Safety and maintenance relaxing, and reduction of OHSA funding inspections and maintance " may " be a contributing factor.

The increase over the last 12 months is NOT on its own, enough to indicate that foreign or home grown, or a combination of both, bad actors, have contributed to significant events during the last 12 months.

--------------------------

All of this is something to keep a static eye on.

Safety is no accident. And proper maintance cost, and with huge processing plants, it cost huge amounts.

Might the penny pitchers have leaned out the maintance spending too much?

All of this are things to keep in mind in our future.

Right now, there may not be enough data to make conclusions.

Anyone want to start working at one of these factories now?

Certainly not. That would imply both a certain level of planning and a willingness to allow us to consume less.

No, the only goal is to milk us dry at every turn. Lower wages, higher taxes. Higher costs, less competition.
Spending more for the same, basic things is the same as consuming less, since then a paycheck purchases less wants. Choice is then an elusive mirage rather than reality.

Depending on the type of crude they can change the mix to a degree but only a limited amount without changing the refinery setup. This is why in 2022 / 2023 gasoline was very cheap - they were processing a ton of material to send to Europe due to Ukraine war / supply shortage from Russia, and we were still in WFH mode so there was excess gasoline supply.

It could be that were out of refining capacity so the marginal increase means importing refined product which is expensive?

Gas taxes are actually mid-pack in North Carolina as compared to the rest of the states and are nowhere near the low end.
Guess y'all voted to pay more than we do in Ohio or than they do in New York.

LOL. Ours was the lowest in the nation and we were all happy with that when our former governor on her way out decided to push a gas tax hike bill through with the help of her scumbag friends that raised it every year for some number of years. Here argument was "ours is the lowest in the nation". Really, you can't make this up. No one wanted it. No one voted for it. We all know no one will ever take it back.

A station owner once told me that if they drop their price then the next time they purchase fuel the distributor makes them pay more than everyone else. Smaller towns only have one distributor in the area so we are stuck with higher prices.
