Gas jumped 64 cents a gallon.... Total rip off!

Illinois finally dropped below $3 a gallon downstate, which is a miracle considering that we pay nearly 50 cents a gallon in state tax alone (86 cents a gallon in taxes total).

I filled up in Paris, IL over the weekend for $2.65 a gallon.

This past Thursday, I filled the Accord up with regular unleaded gasoline at my local BJ's for $2.09/gal.
At that time, the price on the street was going to $2.99.
Saturday/Sunday, most everything had jumped to $3.19.
At 6 AM Today, I went by one of the stations that were $3.19, and it had returned to $2.99.
I just checked the same station at 10:56 AM, and it was down to $2.89.
The BJ that I filled up at on Thursday, as well as my closest Costco are at $2.44.
It's been a unusually wild pricing weekend.

How much is tax? Government needs to be paid. We subsidize roads and such through income and other taxes - so possibly ours is cheaper at the pump - but pay me now / pay me later?
We pay plenty of taxes. Our federal plus provincial income tax is generally higher than in the US, we have a national sales tax (GST/HST), sales taxes in most provinces (PST), and there are taxes at the pump as well.

We produce more crude oil than we consume (and export the excess to the US and recently to China) but we have a sparse population, and a very big country with lots of roads.

Oil Refinery - A factory where huge amounts crude oil is heated to temperatures that cause it to separate out various hydrocarbon molecules acording to the chin lengths of the of those molecules, and unwanted chemicals such as Sulphur are removed.

Sounds like a safe process. Yea, what could possibly go wrong with that?

^ That said, even though such processing plants have a normal history of problems. In todays world when factories go boom or up in flames, one has to keep in mind that there are foreign powers who would gladly support bad actors. Determining cause is not always possible with what remains afterwards.

However, if the tally of such occurrences over time exceeds the known history of similar lengths of time in a statistical significant amount, then one has to consider that new problems are at play here.

I dont know that we are there yet. And if we are, some who would be the first to figure it out may not want to shout it from the rooftops. However, if the tally over time becomes way beyond normal, it would not take a rocket scientist to figure it out.

I bought gas last week for 2.65 a gallon in mid Michigan. It is now 3.29 a gallon. I would always see 30-40 cent jumps which I think are still ridiculous. But this is by far the most outrageous jump. Why???
Electricity price is fixed 😂 for homeowners charing their EVs.

Gasoline prices always subject to daily market conditions including geo-political and supply. Not sure the “rip off” happening.

But this is by far the most outrageous jump. Why???
60 cents jumps are not uncommon here

Your gas is really cheap compared to pretty much everywhere else in the world.
A whole bunch of you are commenting on the price per gallon and that's not what the OP is posting about. He/she is posting about the amount of the increase in a single shot.

“Fixed”, you say? Since 2020 it’s on a nearly fixed vertical trend…

Gas prices are controlled by the distributor. Any gas station that buys fuel from them in a given area must all sell at the same price. This is why you can go five miles away and see gas for 20 cents cheaper. It's price fixing.

Yeah - maybe that’s not the norm - posted our Exxon @ $2.59 has held for a while - and non top tier for $2.19 just 45 minutes away …
0.20 is the biggest jump I have seen

No pic but this was UP a week ago, Wi dropped to $2.45 for the first time in a year, hopefully the massive drop in fuel demand doesn’t actually cause a massive spike here.

The e free pump was definitely an antique
