Gas engine oil in a diesel

I just realized something when doing my last oil change on the 6.0L Powerstroke a week ago. I threw 2 gallons of HD Rotella T6 5w40 in it, and mistakenly grabbed the wrong conventional oil to top it off with, almost another 2 gallons of gas engine oil 10w30 !

What exactly is the difference between gas and diesel engine oils other than added detergents in the HD oil and how much of a problem could this end up being ?

Gas engine oil is not designed to deal with the large amount of soot and other contaminants that a Diesel engine puts into the oil.

If it was my truck I'da already drained it out! But I may be over paranoid. But with the 6.0's terrible track record I would not do anything like run the wrong oil in it.

It needs all the help it can get.

From what I have read it is a completely different add pack. There are more dispersants for soot in diesel engine oil.

You can get away with diesel engine oil in a gas engine, but it isn't the greatest to put gas engine oil in a diesel.

I could be wrong, but personally I'd dump that fill asap and put in diesel engine oil. Just to prevent any possible wear issues.

kinda like putting shampoo in your dishwasher.

If it was me, I would change it at your earliest convenience. Or just do a short oil change interval, say half of your normal OCI.

my .02

I'm afraid this thread is all for not, for me anyhow ! Sorry guys..... I prematurely started a thread before actually verifying what oil I have in what jugs and which ones I grabbed.

I used HD dino..... it's all good thank god ! I should seriously get all my oils relabeled and organized better.

Hopefully someone who actually does mix wrong oil will benefit from info contained in this thread one day.....

For a 50/50 mix I would go with this too. It's not a life-threatening scenario to have gasser oil in a diesel, but certainly not a great idea to leave it in there very long!

If you were to have used 100% gasser oil I wouldn't go more than 20% of a normal OCI.

There is no PCMO in his HDEO.

End of story.

End of my issue, true that...... but that doesn't mean some other poor soul won't make this kind of mistake one day and come looking for info on what to do. This thread is already here and going with insight, it will be helpful to someone one day......
