How universal are OPE gas caps? I have a old Toro weed wacker/trimmer which works good enough but I'd rather not spend any more money on. Gas cap leaks something fierce. Lots of options but everything is manufacture specific; the b&s is half the cost of a toro cap...

Update, looks like the part number for the gas cap assembly is 77-1980 and seems to be running over $30 online. Thats insane.

Nope! That's Toro! They're generally outrageous for marking up parts.

I recall being at a Toro dealership (due to desperation) and a guy came in with a stripped 5/16th x 1" bolt off a Toro product. They charged him $5.85 for a replacement bolt. Could have bought it at a hardware store for fifteen cents.

Weedeater caps have a check valve to let air in but not let (much) gas run out should you tilt the machine so that the cap is submerged in gas.

Go to a large small engine shop and ask if you can rummage through their junk pile for a similar one.

You can't find an ebay one for $2?

Only a fool would buy a bolt for that price.
