From what I've been told, some brands of gasoline, Shell for example, use more detergent additives than most other brands. How does this affect engine oil? Wouldn't a gas higher in detergents actually be a bit harder on engine oil?
There is some truth to feeling this way. Additives keep the injectors, valves and pistons clean and combustion clean. All this helps the oil. Some unburned addative may make its way into the oil but so little in my opinion it is not worth your worry. Shell V power gives me better milage than other high test gasoline. This tells me the engine is more efficnent and therefore cleaner and keeping the oil cleaner.
