garage door not opening and closing

I have a lift master 1/2 hp garage door opener. The part number is 41a5021-1b but i think this is for the logic board.

the gear device snapped off the motor as you can see from the image. Motor spins nicely

my question is....is this part replaceable? we dont want to buy a whole new unit. anyone have experience with these?

p.s. the quality on these garage doors are JUNK! the gear set inside the garage door box is made of plastic. i took the cover off and saw lots of shavings. its just a matter of time before the gears completely rounds off.

Lift Master also makes craftsman. Find the Sears Craftsman equivalent, you might just save some money. I would fix it. It will take you about two hours from start to finish. My lift Master needed a new gear set too and found out it was cheaper ordering through Sears and the parts came faster.

Mine was noted as needing replacement two years ago when a new door was installed. Installer noted the cracks and said it was on its last legs. I believe he stated that the cost to replace the part (if done by installer and not a DIY) was about the same as buying a new motor, basically new installation. Mine is 23 years old at this point

These garage doors are generally very reliable. I had to replace the plastic gear set on the opener on my wife's side of the garage a few years ago, and had to replace the capacitor on my opener last month. Both appear to be original to the house, 1993. Parts are cheap for them also, and you can get a replacement to that chain drive shaft that broke on yours.

Pieces like the chain drive and the plastic drive gears below are made to be weak links, in case something in the system (garage door, chain drive, etc) jams. It's designed to save the motor itself, which is the expensive part. I think you'll find plastic gears in most any modern garage door opener. A replacement gear set is cheap, like a matter of a few dollars on eBay. If everything is adjusted and lubricated correctly, they should last for 10-15 years easy. The opener on my side is still on the original plastic drive gears.

Do check the tension on your drive chain, and inspect the garage door springs carefully. If your springs are weak, the garage door opener is doing more work than it's designed to do. The springs should lift the weight of the garage door by themselves. If you disconnect the garage door opener from the door itself (pull the rope), you should be able to easily lift the door yourself, and it should stay on the track wherever you position it. It shouldn't roll back down to closed. If it does, your springs are weak, and may be a contributing factor to the failure on your door opener.

A 1/2 horsepower unit may be too light-duty for your garage door.

I replaced the plastic gears in my mother's garage door opener... but they failed again after just a few months. She splurged on a better-quality unit -- same company, I think it's Chamberlain? and the new one works great.

It's also a good idea to check the rails, to make sure the rails are straight and the rollers are not binding anywhere.
