Oh, the choices! I have recently been quite a critic of synthetic oils because of there high price! I droped M1 back in 06 because the new PP was lots cheaper, and just as good oil. I recently swaped from PP to Chevron supreme synthetic after I found a distributer and it is retelatively cheap...$30 bucks for six quart case. I have always used 5w30 and have one oil change left of the chevron but would like to get your opinions on mabe a switch to something cheaper...mabe a high milage oil...a synthetic blend? I know MC blend is on sale at freds for $3 per quart. I drive a 99 honda accord with the 4 cyl...190k. Driven daily 100 mile round trip on the interstate. No city driving at all. Just back and forth to work. I read motor craft semi synthetic is made by CP and always herd good things from them. I usually do 7-8k oil changes as speced by honda for normal driving and I use enlarged wix filters. It does get hot here in the summer with 105+ daily summer temps and avg 20 's in winter.

I just use whatever 5W-20 conventional that is on sale for both of the vehicles I maintain. I just finished a nice 10 minute oil change on my pick up and it cost 20 bucks using 7QT's of Pennzoil Conventional and a motorcraft filter.

I forgot to add this is with a 7K OCI. Much like yours, with all the data I have seen with modern conventional's 7K is really not a extended OCI any longer.

$30 for 6 quarts of synthetic is a good deal?!

Most of my synthetic quarts have been $1 or less.

The only time I've spent $30 for 6 quarts was for Mobil 1 0w40 which is rarely discounted like other synthetics.

In the OP's application, this is a solid idea. 5 qt jugs at Wal-Mart for less than $30, plus a Bosch Distance Plus filter for about $11.

I don't know how cost is the reason to avoid synthetics like Mobil 1. You can get 50 to 100% more miles out of Mobil 1 compared to conventional oil, so the cost is justified.

A lot of High Mileage oils are basically the same oil as the regular product, but with a stronger additive pack, seal conditioners, etc. Other things being equal, I'd prefer High Mileage conventional over plain conventional. Synthetic blends are also good oils, specially Motorcraft. I'd compare it to something like Valvoline Maxlife. If you want to go with synthetic and High Mileage formulation, you can always also try the Mobil 1 High Mileage.

I stoped using M1 in the summer of 06 or 07, i think 07, anyway, a 5 quart jug had just jumped from 18.96 to 21.96 at wal mart. I saw the new PP on sale for about 14 bucks per 5 quart jug. I bought a couple jugs and still use it today. My complaint is M1 doubled in price in 5 years!!! PP has has doubled in price also. I can see mabe a 5% price increase per year, but not 100%! There has to be a line in the sand so to speak when synthetics just become too expensive. I understand the M1 can go 10k oic's', but the blends have come a long way and I think I can come out cheaper in the long run using them with just as much protection for the engine.

But you have to actually run it much longer to get the value back...I see lots of used oil analysis with premium syns on here at 7k or so, when a good conventional will run 5k in most apps it doesn't make much sense.

So you can, but for some reason most people don't.

When do you want to change the oil? Here is an example of what the oil change intervals might look like for various oils in my truck.

6,000 miles - Supertech
7,500 miles - Pennzoil conventional
9,000 miles - Quaker State Ultimate Durability
10,000 miles - Mobil 1
12,000 miles - Pennzoil Ultra
15,000 miles - Mobil 1 Extended Performance

You need to adjust the intervals to fit the various lubricants and decide what cost and labor profile fits you best. You might also want a better filter for the longer intervals.

In my truck their is very little difference is cost per mile between Supertech w/ Purolator Classic and Mobil 1 Extended Performance w/ Bosch Distance Plus.

Pretty much says it all, IMHO anyway.
