Full Size Trucks With 6 Cylinder Engines

My brother had a Chevy van with the 305 V8, pulling his boat up a ramp was a real PIA. He sold the van bought an F-150 with the 4.9L pulling the boat up the ramp became much easier.

The Votec 4.3L was better in the speed dept but when it came down to pulling power the 4.9L blew it away. It was like night and day.

I think they had a bad batch of bearings for a while, because the 4.9 six I was mentioning wore out at around 100K miles, and that contradicts pretty much everything I have heard about them. The oil pressure went down due to excessive clearances.

Sure, but a 292 L6 has cylinders and cams that resemble those of a big block. The result is better low end torque, but a rapid fall in power at 4000 RPM.

Though great engines, the design of the cyl heads are not so up to date.

The 300 I6 was never designed for fuel economy. And it never received a redesign to make it thus. It was a tractor engine with seven mains, big bore, long stroke and incredible durability.

When fuel economy became a real concern of consumers, it just so happened that this engine was no longer featured in the F-series.
