Full OPH253 Cut Open, Unknown Mileage/Interval

Pulled this one off of the '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L that was in the shop. Obviously this is the wrong filter. Not sure when was the last OCI was done, Oil change sticker said 108K KM, August 10. Could of been sometime back in 2010?

Put Pennzoil Conventional 10w30 in with a Hastings LF115 equal to PH8A, which is a larger PH16 filter.

I don't know how all that sludge got into the bypass side of the filter. Very close to tearing though.

It was deffinatley full. Looks good except for the gunk in the tube.

Its those louvers on the filters that are causing this trouble.

Apparent that sludge/grit got through the bypass valve at some point. Not other way for it to get through unless there was a tear in the media somewhere.

Farmer - what's the orientation of that filter on the Jeep? If it's somewhat base up, then that could also explain why the crud is down on the bypass valve in the dome end.

A '96 Jeep 4.0L has the oil filter horizontally.
