Howdy all,

I ran this PH8A for 6 months on my Jeep, which worked out to be 3,400 miles, the summer run. Fill was Pennzoil High Mileage. It was noted that the PH16 and the PH8A had been improved last year, I ran a PH16 last summer that worked great so this last summer tried a PH8A for fun. I mangled it cutting open, took a look and threw it away. However I rescued it from the trash and took a couple pics for the benefit of a few that were interested. PH8A had 36 pleats, (formerly 32) all very straight, seam gap was average overall looked very good. I would run one again had no issues other than a couple start up rattles the first 500 miles that then went away.

On the flip side this PH3600 was run for about 7k on my son's Chrysler Concorde. There were no tears or compromises but this is one of the ugliest 3600's I've seen. Not sure why, but I am guessing it had larger than average gaps at the pleat. I have run several other of these and none ever looked like this, so I was surprised to say the least. I also ran a Tough Guard 3600 on the same car for about 11k and it looked great so I'm not sure what's up here.

You will see some damage to both elements, I literally snipped them open not intending to post at the time. Both filters were structurally sound with no rips or tears, and nothing of note on ADBV's or bypasses. All systems normal. The endcap damage on the filters is also from my rough extraction.

The PH3600 suffers from the fiber end cap distortion that happens when too few pleats meet short trips & moisture, generally resulting in a leaky ADBV & possibly some oil sneaking past the element. PH8A looks good, though.

I don't recall exactly but I believe both were late 2015 production, based upon time of purchase from a high volume retailer.

I have never bought into the "oil sneaking past" speculation myself. I have cut too many Frams with fiber stuck against the ADBV and compression marks from the bypass, and oil pressure only increases the seal pressure of those parts. That and their efficiency is just too darn high in testing for them to be "leaking". JMO.

Goes to show that the media in these filters can take some abuse without tearing (which is important) ... unlike others we have seen around hear for the last 2+ years.

Typical Orange can. It did the job but there are other better choices in filters to use in that price point.

Can you give us specific examples of what you think would be better in these applications for the same price?

Yes the 3600 had a metal crimp seam. I am not sure my other ones did. I will go back and look.

Well here is what I found. Two older 3600's I ran, one was a TG and the other a PH3600. On these two, the TG has a metal crimp and wide pleat spacing at the seam. This PH3600 had the glued seam and ended up with better looking results. Interesting, I wonder if these filters are coming from different plants and one is using a metal crimp the other glue? Regardless, it seems apparent to me a glued seam in preferred.

After some of the Purolators I've cut open, not sure I will be running them for awhile. I'd run an OCOD over them. These filters didn't look all that bad. Some wide pleat spacing? Sure. But the end cap damage was from cutting them open, and wide pleats are less of a concern to me than torn ones.

As always, thanks for cutting and posting KCJeep!

I went back through some old pictures, found a PH8A with a metal seam and a PH3980 also with metal seam. I remain convinced I'd rather have a PH series with a glued seam. I can't believe I didn't notice that before.
