Hi Gang,

We've seen a bunch of these but always interesting to look. The old phrase "move along folks nothing to see here" comes to mind. The Tough Guard was used for about 4k on my Jeep, the orange can version PH3600 was only run about 500 miles as an experiment, no surprise Jeep didn't care for it. Not sure why construction is so close to the Tough Guard 3600 which runs/starts great for me. The PH3600 does confirm what I've noted before, all orange cans are not created equal and the 3600's are among the better ones media wise.

Onto the guts!

The subjects, the TG came from Wally's the orange can AAP.

Comparison, already cut. Sorry, I often cut well before I get around to taking pics I've had these two quite a while.

Base plates appear identical, other than the Tough Guards visible red silicone ADBV.

Elements out, they look pretty good. Endcaps were fine but they extend close to the end and I got into both of them a bit with the hacksaw.

The Tough Guard had 46 pleats, the Extra Guard had 40, the most I think I've ever counted in an orange can.

This tends to be the "ugly" side particularly with Frams. The Tough Guard especially didn't look real impressive here compared to others I've seen, the orange can actually was more uniform near the pleats. No media tears or compromises that I could find though. The TG used a crimped metal seam and the orange can was simply glued together.

Bypasses out, also appeared identical and intact. Takes a fair amount of pressure to open them again we've seen these before nothing surprising here.

Hope you enjoyed the filter porn!

The main problem with Fram Extra Guard oil filter is less filter media but costs more than Purolator Classic and other low/mid range filters.

Fram Tough Guard is okay but at $6.xx I rather buy Purolator P1 or Wix ...

You've said before that your Jeep is pretty picky on filters. How did it like these?

Is the orange ADBV silicon? Do you have any experience with an Ultra? I've been wanting to try one, but I currently have 6 oil filters in my stash. Lol.

+1

They both look good, except for the part where you cut the endcap with the hacksaw

Tough Guards are good filter.

They look like Frams. Not pretty, but no obvious failures, either. I've cut a number of Frams open, and I've used a lot of orange cans. Never had a problem with them.

Tough Guards start/run real well for me on my picky Jeep. I am running another one now in fact, they are my favorite filter for longer OCI's. Since the orange can was so similar in construction and design I thought it might too. Nope. Ultra gives me start up rattle but not the Tough Guard, go figure. Yes the TG has a silicone ADBV that is the orange one you are seeing.

Thanks for posting. I've never run a Fram but if I didn't already have a P1 on deck I'd get a TG next. It's convenient to me because I already buy oil from Walmart and even if Fram isn't the best its still better than the e-core I'm currently running.

Yep the 3600 is a solid filter usually, the TG looks like it held up well for 5k. Not surprised that the TG gives the least start up noise with better flow and silicone adbv.

Not much of a test on the orange can, so hard to tell how it would have handled 5k.

I agree a short term experiment but I still figured it'd be worth looking at. The number of pleats surprised me though, I think 40 is some kind of record for an orange can.
