Has been in a sealed container for just under 5 months in my garage that is semi climate controlled. Im wondering if I should send it to cut grass duty or put in my truck and not even think about it. What is yalls take on this? Kinda nervous as I have just started trying out fuel storage for generators as we are on the shaky power grid. Thanks!

Tend to agree with the use a little at a time in a vehicle to dispose of it.

I keep stabilized fuel in my generator and cycle the cans in the cars so the fuel I keep on hand isn't more than a month old.

Once a year, I drain the generator and refill it with stabilized fuel.

Depending on the quantity, using it up just a gallon at a time might make a somewhat older gas get even older. Use it up 5 gallons of it mixed with 15 gallons of a Top Teir gas, like Shell or Chevron, etc. in your truck. At 5 months the gas IS NOT bad, its just getting older, so, use it up with confidence in a timely manner. Note most companies suggest their gas is good for 6 months in storage.

Air is the killer for gas..for corn gas at least.
How SEALED is your container - aka, does it have a auto vent(does it breath) or how's the cap on it.

I have a tonnage of jerry cans. They don't vent, they don't breath. They may swell up some if really heated. I do use them with a bit of Star Tron and rotate them.

I sometimes store gas in sealed cans - the non-breathable kind. I stock up when it's $3.38 a gallon, and use it up to 6 months later when it's $4.29 a gallon. I don't notice any problems with the gas.

The way prices yo-yo in Michigan, one can even out the fluctuations. I've never seen it yo-yo as much in other states as it does in Michigan.

The can was bought and driven to the gas station to fill so the gas and can are the same age. I guess Ill just pump it in since its technically 4 months and 20 something days old and sealed in a semi climate controlled garage.

Kestas -

Just curious. How much fuel are you storing when you store.

5 Gallons at roughly 42lb in a container.

I presume you're using a Super Siphon or something when filling it back into your tank ;-)

If I'm thinking right...we're talking the gallon metal cans you typically see with mineral spirits ?

Those do have some "slop" in how the can/lid seals.
It's interesting to hear how your results are.

I think for large fuel tanks like cars, it's not that noticable. Well, yeah, it can run but it may not run decent.

Whereas in small engines (aka, OPE), that problem is more magnified

The major issue is also with the ethanol being hydroscopic. It will absorb any water it can get it's grubby mits on.

Fuel stabilizer. Don't store fuel in the generator (run it empty after use). Keep fuel for up to 1.5 years stabilized. After 1 year, start to rotate in fresh fuel if no major use is immediately seen ahead (storm season, etc.)

With the metal cans no air gets in, no gasoline vapors get out. I don't see how the gas can get stale with my setup.

One problem with this set up is that the cans bulge with warmer weather. I haven't had any problems with that... yet.

Hmm... I put some 93 Octane in airtight plastic cans and run all season on them... If the fuel is low ethanol, and cans are airtight, I've not seen issue.... even with the snarky tiny motors like the weed whacker.
