Back in the UK, whenever I was replacing a fuel filter, I'd "prime" the new fuel filter with injector cleaner and install it. The purpose was to get undiluted fuel injector cleaner running straight through for 'better' cleaning. Then again, it's a questionable practice.

I'm replacing the fuel filter on the big Ford tomorrow, and started questioning as to whether or not this does more harm than good. Any input? Does anybody else do this? Thanks!

Newer fuel systems recirculate fuel constantly, it's not one-way like a carburetor or old fuel injection system. Filling your filter with injector cleaner will just cycle it back to the tank.

It depends if the system is returnless, and where the return is located.

It can't hurt anything, but probably won't do much tht throwing the cleaner into the tank would not do.

Old high pressure fuel injection systems [continuous types] could give a massive rush of high pressure fuel to a dry fuel filter.
Wetting them and priming them first was done to prevent tears and ruptures.

FI cleaner would be used so quickly that it would be almost useless.
