A little varnish on the valve doesn't matter, the seat and face are likely clean. Cleaning it off risks getting [censored] stuck on your valve seat and overheating the valve. The old leaded gas left huge deposits on valves; what we see today on valves is nothing. I had the valves out of my 10 year old Explorer and they were like new, not even any vanish.
