Personally, I'd be running 10w40 red jug Maxlife in the summer and 5w30 in Winter. I see you're in NE ohio, so legit winter starts are a need.Hi all. I did the first oil change on our 2104 Expedition with Pennzoil Platinum HM 5w-30. Bought 2 5qt jugs (7qt fill), ran that for 5k miles and did the second change with the remaining 3qts of Platinum HM and the balance with regular Pennzoil Full Syn 5w30. Looking forward I'd like to find a more frugal option. I feel like Pennzoil Platinum is wasted on a 5k drain interval but wouldn't like to extend OCIs because of the 5.4 3v's reputation for being sensitive to long drains.
In subsequent oil changes I switched to Mobil 0w-40, found it on an awesome clearance deal for a box. I just finishedoff the rest of that with my most recent oci.Personally, I'd be running 10w40 red jug Maxlife in the summer and 5w30 in Winter. Red jug is my default "cheap oil" because it's available in so many viscosity grades and usually right at or under $20/5qt.
Good deal. The sad reality of NE Ohio is that almost any oil can be used because the rest of the vehicle will rot around the perfectly fine engine. In subsequent oil changes I switched to Mobil 0w-40, found it on an awesome clearance deal for a box. This Expedition was rust free when we bought it in the summer of '23. I took it to a guy who does Fluid Film and the underside still has a coating left on it. I will take it again later this summer for a recoat.Good deal. The sad reality of NE Ohio is that almost any oil can be used because the rest of the vehicle will rot around the perfectly fine engine.
Maybe invest in some Surface Shield as much or more so than oil.
