Hi All,

I'm just about to start up my newly rebuilt motor.

It's a 2.4L 4 cylinder from a Nissan 240SX. Aluminum head, cast iron block, shim on bucket DOHC, forged pistons, rods, slightly larger cams, etc.

I've been considering using a Joe Gibbs "Driven" break-in oil, although I already bought PYB 5w-30.

The only thing I'm concerned about with PYB is the high moly.

Should I go with a specialty break-in oil or just run the PYB?

I'd use the PYB on the KA24DE without worry. Had one a few years back and ran PYB and a TG for 1500 miles then drained out and went with some M1. Rebuilt it with around 200k miles after spun a crank bearing. Sold it to a friend of mine and he put a twin turbo setup on it and uses it for drag/drift racing on the weekends. Still going strong.

The PYB with high moly is what the doctor ordered for your first oil, and second OCI and so on.
Change it out at 1,000Kms and keep using PYB.

What's a TG?

Oh BTW the engine is also a turbo but I'm not sure that matters on a short break-in.

It's not a bad idea to use a high ZDDP oil for initial break-in which Joe Gibbs Driven is.
After the break-in period, since this is a turbo motor I'd suggest a synthetic oil such as PP 5W-30.

Some OEMs use a high moly lube as FF.
Honda comes to mind.
Since the only real break-in you probably need to worry about will be seating the rings, I doubt that moly would cause any problems.

I like to do my first oil change after 30-50 miles or so to get rid of the dust, grime, and first wear that may be a result of a not perfect environment where we assemble engines.

Then about 1000 miles, and then normal.

But always with the mineral version of what will eventually be the standard fill until it stops consuming. Then synthetic if I want (especially turbos).

I would use the Joe Gibbs high zddp oil or the Amsoil break in oil.

Break-In Oil

What you want is an oil with almost zero friction modifiers but one with lots of ZDDP anti-wear.

Molakule, what are you thoughts on using an SF/CF-2 SAE 40 for running in. Or even a SF/CF SAE 30?

Thanks all.

I will use the PYB for the initial break in of 50 miles and then flush with PYB, then synthetic.

The last motor I used RL 5w-40 and the bearings looked pretty good.

I may even try RTS 15w-40 for summer since I'm assuming it can take a bit more punishment and is a bit cheaper.

For most rebuilds I prefer a 30 wt with lots of ZDDP and no moly or any other friction modifier and run it for 500 miles.

An SF rated (non-fuel conserving) 30w oil should work as well.

I like the custom break in oil myself...think it will help "set" up the engine better for down the road.

That said, I can't see PYB being a bad idea either.

Neighbor used the amsoil break in oil with good results for his mustang....

From my experience, using single weight oils on a fresh rebuild is the worst time. It is when tolerances are the closest, and need oil on those first startups as fast as possible and everywhere.

Just picked up the Driven BR30 5w-30 break-in oil by Joe Gibbs. Directions say to use it for no more than 400 miles.

I will report back on the results.

That's always bugged me, too. I wonder if a dedicated multigrade race oil might be best for such a thing. The AW package will be high, while there won't be a lot of detergent and probably no friction modifiers. Alternatively, companies could quit marketing monograde break in oils.
