If our citizens really want everything in the U.S. to be like Sweden or many other socialist countries...why not just immigrate to them? Most offer the same "free" tuition to foreign students. Just move.....that would be best for all of us.

Well, if it's free, at least they'll get what they paid for.

When you look at some of the twit stuff now existing on college campuses, I'd say the value of a modern american college education is certainly up for debate.

Well 1st grade to high school is free, that's basically 12 years of schooling that's free. What's another 4 years? Also maybe the push was for community college that would be free and that's only 2 years.

where is Germany now in the living standard ranks? where is US?

So free education itself is not a bad thing at all, but I just don't know if the US is ready for it YET.
 
There's a happy place somewhere between the six figure loans students are graduating with now, and free. The private schools that are not offering a real education need to be cracked down on, and I think community colleges writing off the cost for the classes where a student earns something like a C+ or greater would be a good start to cleaning up this mess.

We do need to invest in education at all levels if we are going to be the world's superpower for generations to come.
 
The current model is broke. There is no need whatsoever for students in residency, leaving home to attend "college". Once upon a time, 500 years ago, when there was only ONE BOOK, then you might have had a case for it.

Make it "free", and universities will go even deeper into being the liberal indoctrination centers that they already are. Anyway, mature individuals understand that nothing is free. But, blow up this model! It should be 80% cheaper.
 
I would say that paying for college makes students value their education and only spend what they need to but the current system of easy loans has shown that college students are generally not mature enough to make wise financial decisions. But parents are just as much to blame by allowing their kids to rack of thousands in loans all to get the "college" experience.

So, if we now offer free college education can we control it? In other words no more taking 6 years to get a 4 year degree, no more outlandish dorms, rec rooms, etc? Will govt control bring down the cost of education to a reasonable amount so that we are not just shifting the extreme cost of education onto the taxpayers?

Yeah right.

Germany doesn't send just any idiot to school do they?
 
Real problem is the cost is too high - and for no good reason.

I only paid ( myself) between $700- 1400 a semester to an accredited University. Went local (Lowell, MA) and dad bought me a used car for 700 bucks to drive there.

I don't want to pay for the education until they get the cost under control - same problem with the health care system.
Too much fat cow milking.

I didnt have any kids, so I paid thousands of tax dollars for the kids to go to school in my town for 25 years - and I got NO TAX BREAK. Socialistic Discrimination of sorts.
