The Amazon lockers near my house are at a 7-11 store. Worked great to return a couple items.

The student union at UC Berkeley is right on the edge of campus. There's metered (and free) street parking all around, so it's not a huge deal if just dropping off a package. Sure their primary goal of setting up this location was to serve students, but it's available to all Amazon customers. I was also a bit tired and wanted to charge my phone. All I had was a cable, so the USB power outlets they had in the lounge came in handy. The one thing I was surprised at was the lack of the homeless camping out there, but I suppose having employees allows them to tell people to leave.
I don't think the typical Amazon Locker location does pickup. The campus (or near-campus) locations have drop-off chutes, and maybe a few others do. I'm not even sure why my wife didn't just have a UPS label printed so we could take it to a UPS Store. She just gave it to me on a Saturday telling me that I needed to drop it off there since I was already taking my kid to Berkeley. The one thing was that it is open later than a UPS Store, and they consider a package to be dropped off in time for that day as long as it's deposited before the location closes. At a UPS Store it has to be received in time for that's day's driver pickup.

I love Walmart free pickup at the store. My local Walmart doesn't stock the shelves very good, so I can order stuff and pick it up later. Or order stiff that they don't stock in the store and pick it up a week or so later. Yes, there is sometimes a trick to get the free ship to store right.

Of course no system can show real-time inventory short of having RFID on packages with readers everywhere. Sometimes the last one is in someone's cart. Maybe it's only in the storeroom, and good luck getting someone who can find it. My kid wanted something at Target and their website said in stock and ready for pickup same day at the store we were at. Didn't see it on the shelves.
One time I was looking for an item and the WM website said it could be shipped to a store, but showed no pickup that day. I went anyways and it was in stock and cheaper than the online price.
I guess Home Depot has one of the better websites, since it displays the number of unsold items at each store. That still doesn't account for items in a cart, shoplifting, or items abandoned away from their display space. Still, if it's saying there are 22 items in stock that's a pretty good indicator that one should be able to find it.

The manager were never around to get involved nor could you just grab one from the shelf and ask them to use it for the transaction. The only option they allow you to do is to cancel the order. That's 30 minutes wasted.
It's all about who they hire and Walmart seems to be the worst at that.
